Yamamoto is one of the few Japanese jazz players who has any feel for the medium. If you like bluesy jazz piano with amazingly dynamic sound, you can't go wrong here! About the Recording 45 RPM Three Blind Mice 2-LP 180 gram pressing set with DEMO DISC SOUND! These were limited to 1000 numbered pressings and they are OFFICIALLY OUT OF PRINT, never to be repressed. The 33 RPM versions were pretty darn amazing, but these 45s take the sound of this recording to an entirely new level. There are a couple of quite obvious benefits to mastering this music at 45 RPM. One is that Yamamoto tends to use his right hand in a percussive manner, which creates tracking problems on most any set up. At 45 RPM the mastering engineer is able to cut those transients, full of difficult to deal with harmonics, much more cleanly and accurately. The result is a sense of "ease" that you don't hear on the 33. It's a bit like having a slightly underpowered system which makes loud passages or transients seem to be right at the edge of distortion, and then switching to a more powerful amplifier and hearing those passages reproduced with the relaxed quality that more headroom gives you. Also the sound opens up quite a bit on these 45s so that more of the room ambience is heard. The Japanese are famous for their close-miking, and sometimes the sense of real musicians in a real space is lacking. Here much of that quality is restored. Yamamoto is one of the few Japanese jazz players who has any feel for the medium. If you like bluesy jazz piano with amazingly dynamic sound, you can't go wrong here! Recorded at Aoi Studio, Toyko, on August 7, 1974. Imagine listening to a piano trio, alone in the middle of the night as you sip your favorite drink. Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio offers just such a mood. Yamamoto is highly musical and his expressions natural, neither overly technical nor overly serious, and his performance is relaxed and melodious. This album is his second, after the debut Midnight Sugar. The same closely-knit trio plays here, with Isao Fukui on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums. With a brief from the labels founder Takeshi ‘Tee’ Fujii to make the sound ‘more clean, open and natural’, the album has been expertly re-mastered and re-cut by JVC’s Tohru Kotetsu as this double 45rpm set. Unlike so much audiophile material of the era this benefits from a truly gifted trio who demonstrate real jazz chops as they take on the standards and single ‘own’ composition that make up this seven number set. It’s immediately obvious that an exceptional job has been done on the re-mastering. The weight and power of the piano, the dynamic range and percussive attack, are extraordinary. The band’s take on ‘Yesterdays’ gives true prominence to the double bass conveying all the subtleties of Isoo Fukui’s finger work. Side 4 opens with a delicate ‘I Didn’t Know What Time It Was’ and closes with one of my favourites here, ‘Angel Eyes’. This was the first Three Blind Mice recording I ever heard, over 20 years ago. A fellow audiophile who went on to become sort of an audio guru for me (George Louis) played me this record to demonstrate his stereo. It had to be the most dynamic piano recording I had ever heard in my life. Yamamoto likes to tinkle the keys very softly, and then really pound them. And the Three Blind Mice engineers were able to capture both the quiet tinkling because of the Japanese vinyl, and the full on pounding because of the audiophile recording equipment they used. This is excellent, swinging jazz music. I play it on a regular basis just for enjoyment. It's an amazing sounding Three Blind Mice recording, one of their best. If you didn't know better you would swear it's a Direct Disc! This is also one of my favorite Three Blind Mice records musically. It's real jazz, from the school where popular songs are turned into an opportunity to rework them in a jazzy style. The best examples of that are on side 1, where Yamamoto takes the song The Way We Were and slows it down to a crawl -- somehow it works! Followed by Girl Talk by Neil Hefti, which has a Midnight Sugar groove going. Since that's one of the best TBM titles, you can consider it quite a compliment. The other sides are almost as good, with a batch of well-chosen jazz standards and the lovely pop tune What Now My Love. From the CiscoMusic.com website: Completing a “trilogy” of great records that started with MIDNIGHT SUGAR and MISTY, GIRL TALK solidified Tsuyoshi Yamamoto’s reputation as Japan’s premier jazz pianist. Though he would continue to tour and record for Takeshi “Tee” Fujii more than a decade, GIRL TALK became the pinnacle of his career. This trio of classic LPs together are a benchmark in Japanese jazz records in particular and recording engineering in general.
