Cuốn phim nói về cuộc đời của ảo thuật gia lừng danh Burt Wonderstone do Steve Carell đóng, và người đồng nghiệp của ông là Anton Marvelton do Steve Buscemi đóng, là hai ngôi sao từng tung hoành trên bầu trời văn nghệ tại Las Vegas trong nhiều năm, thu hút hàng triệu khán giả với những chương trình biểu diễn vĩ đại cũng không thua gì lòng tự tôn của Burt.
Thế nhưng trong thâm tâm, hai người bí mật thù ghét lẫn nhau và tìm cách hãm hại nhau. Trong lúc đang gặp những cạnh tranh từ một ảo thuật gia khác tên Steve Gray do Jim Carrey đóng, hai bên phải làm mọi cách để tăng cường chương trình của mình để trở thành hay hơn và hấp dẫn hơn đối với khán giả. Steve Carrell cho biết được làm việc chung với Jim Carrey đã là một kinh nghiệm đáng quý. Anh nói đây là một sự hợp tác toàn diện, chứ không phải là cạnh tranh trên sàn quay.
