    Moon And Wind (1999)

    Eastward, something else...

Huong Thanh is not unknown to those who like and appreciate Vietnamese traditional music. As her father was Huu Phuoc, a great cai luong (1) artist, the water-like arpeggios of the dàn tranh, the 16-string zither, or the melancholy plaint of the dàn bàu, the monochord, have always been part of her life. But not satisfied with just following the path paved by her ancestors, Huong Thanh manifests a sincere will to, on the one hand, sing everything, i.e. every kind of Vietnamese traditional music, wherever it comes from – North, Centre or South – and on the other hand, open up to the world as well as modernity. Disregarding the prejudices of the purists, she does not hesitate to play all modes and every repertoire.
Moon and Wind , her first solo album, created by her producer and friend Nguyên Lê, provoked many a surprising encounter: on “One River, Two Streams”, a lovesong which probably goes back to the XVth century, Huong Thanh sings accompanied by the Berber gumbri player(2) Karim Ziad. (He owed her that one: she sang on the Maghreb & Friends album). «The Soaring of the Heron », a melody all vietnamese people have sung, hosts an unexpected guest: Tino di Geraldo, ubiquitous Flamenco artist from Madrid, with his palmas (3) and his cajón (4). Happy accident, not so accidental, as it were, for it seems that both musical sensiblities blend into one intense emotion: Huong Thanh's voice is reminiscent of flamenco's sensuality.
Thus, encounters and blends all concocted by Nguyên Lê, who had already made Huong Thanh sing on his Tales From Viêt-nam (1995, ACT 9225-2), and without whom, she would never have taken the first step… Like him, she proves that cross-culture is no lesser culture, if the mixing is true, and the understanding of the other people and culture really means something, not just a superficial mixture with commercial ends.
But Huong Thanh, remember, is a child of the tradition and also comes from the Mekong region, a mix of different cultures. So like that land's first settlers come from the North, who had to conquer and assimilate the original traditions (Chinese, Cham, Khmer and Montagnard), Huong Thanh, today a Vietnamese exile living in Paris since 1977, had in turn to feed on this outside world, that has become like a second home to her.

Through the grace of her vocal presence, Huong Thanh just reminds those who might have forgotten, that Viêt-nam, despite her regional diversity, is one, and at the same time, need partake of universal culture.

    Sean James Rose

    (1) cai luong: “renovated theatre”, a theatrical art based on songs and dances, created in 1916 in the South of Vietnam.
    (2) gumbri: three-string lute, “the bass of the desert ”, representative of Gnawa music.
    (3) palmas: hand-clapped rhythmic combinations.
    (4) cajón: wooden box, an essential percussion in flamenco. New Sounds from the World

The New Sounds of the World

Let’s redefine « World Music » as the new identity the children of the diaspora are building between the streams of today and the search for the deepest tradition. As we have lived here, we have integrated the tools of the West to create our own culture. From Tales from Viêt-nam to Moon and Wind, I have always tried to weave the threads of those encounters where each one, with his own culture, can give the best of himself. So many things are yet to be shared !

    Saiyuki (Tây Du Ký) (2009)

SAIYUKI*, the Japanese name for the « Journey to the West », is a famous Chinese novel written in the XVIth century by Wu Cheng'en.

A text narrating bonze Xuanzang’s expedition to India during the VIIIth century in a quest for sacred buddhist texts. His main escort in this epic fantasy is Sun Wu Kong, the Monkey King, a most impish character with gifted magic abilities. He can fly on the clouds or change himself into a genie or a fabulous monster. The Chinese Monkey King has also an Indian brother: Hanouman , who is one of the most popular gods of Hinduism. Throughout all of Asia, the « Journey to the West » has always inspired a great range of adaptations through painting rolls, Peking Opera, a Pop Opera from Damon Albarn, Mangas, TV serials, video games like Dragon Ball Z…

I chose to use the « Journey to the West » as an image for travels, both real and imaginary, which bring us together to create this music. Like a quest for a secret which is only found through adventures from afar, while holding on to the most precious treasure, our identity. Passing from Viêt-Nam to India through Japan, we weave the threads of silk which portray an Asia with no borders. Everyone has his or her own center point. The West viewed by the Chinese novel was India, but right now the center is exploding: it becomes plural, Dialogue has began and connections are opening up!

Each musician of Saiyuki is blessed with a double culture combining tradition & modernity and is a virtuoso of their very specific instrument. Mieko & Prabhu have genuine traditional qualities. One has performed an XVIIIth century Japanese classical piece for the Imperial couple, whereas the other has played with living god of hindustani flute, Hariprasad Chaurasia, whom we have the honour & pleasure to invite on this recording.

At the same time, Mieko and Prabhu are also living ethnic musicians, who are keen on styles and techniques of today’s music, curious about new meetings and open to the potentials our world can offer. My language is Jazz, but I have chosen to open it and to nourish it with other essential cultures that fascinate me and remind me of my origins. As a jazz musician, I have as much fun improvising with them as with other great jazz musicians. The challenge is always there as well as freedom & inspiration. Improvisation, an instantaneous understanding and creative process, pushes away the barriers of our cultural encounter.

Saiyuki is the meeting of three shades of Asia, from both today and yesterday. In this playground, identities have so much to share and learn from each other! The roots, deep in the earth. The leaves of the trees, up in the skies…

    Dream Flight (2008) - E L B (Peter Erskine / Nguyen Le / Michel Benita)

Almost eight years ago ACT recorded a transcontinental trio whose members combined the different colours and traditions of their individual musical backgrounds within a seldom-heard level of freedom and equality. They didn’t name the trio; instead they used their initials: out of Peter Erskine, Nguyên Lê, and Michel Benita E_L_B was born.
Their first CD, E_L_B, was released in 2001; the results were thrilling, forceful, yes – astounding. There would have been no question of quickly getting together for a second CD if it hadn’t been first for Nguyên Lê’s serious illness and then the conflicting commitments of the musicians. And so it took until now for three of the most interesting musicians in the world of jazz to get together again. But it doesn’t necessarily do any damage to allow something to ripen over time. At any rate, with the new project, Dream Flight, you can reckon that the three came to this project brimming with anticipation.
Ever since his discovery by big band revolutionary Stan Kenton, 54 year old drummer and percussionist Peter Erskine has been acclaimed as one of the most distinctive and at the same time stylistically open drummers in jazz. In the jazz-rock era he achieved what could be called “superstar” notoriety with the legendary band “Weather Report”. Yet already by the early ‘80’s he was showing a sensitivity and economy of playing with such heterogeneous stars as Maynard Ferguson, Pat Metheny, John Abercrombie, and singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell.
Michel Benita is the same age as Erskine. He was born and grew up in Algeria. With his move to Paris in 1981 he quickly became – among others with Orchestra National de Jazz – one of the greats of the French and European scene. There is scarcely a French or Italian jazz musician of note that he hasn’t worked with, either as sideman, or in his own bands. And such American musicians as Lee Konitz, Archie Shepp, and Billy Hart trust his warm, exceptionally flexible tone.
49 year old guitarist Nguyên Lê was born in Paris of Vietnamese parents. He is one of the key figures of the European jazz scene and founders of the early world music movement. One can see how wide his horizon is by his evenly-weighted admiration of music from his Vietnamese homeland through to the great jazz guitarists, and rock musicians like Jimi Hendrix. He has developed an unmistakeable style that combines the traditions of virtually every continent. As accompanist, producer, friend, and patron of such diverse musicians as Michel Portal, Kenny Wheeler, Paolo Fresu, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Huong Thanh, Terri Lyne Carrington, Chris Potter, and Paul McCandless, to name a few, he has created a unique oeuvre that has been documented on eleven ACT CDs up to this point
This is the story of a long, and now with Dream Flight, deepening friendship: in 1993 Lê was recommended to ACT chief Siggi Loch by none other than Peter Erskine, with whom Lê had already been involved in a wide variety of projects. Erskine was also the one who set up Lê‘s working with American composer-arranger Vince Mendoza. Mendoza has been a regular guest with the WDR radio big band; this collaboration resulted in the production of “Jazzpaña” and “Sketches”, on which Lê is featured. Commenting on Nguyên Lê’s German premiere in 1993, Ulrich Olshausen wrote in the FAZ newspaper “He plays guitar like no one else”.
Dream Flight is not only a long-awaited reunion of old friends; on the opening and title track a fourth commanding force jumps in to the fray – the saxophonist Stéphane Guillaume. He enriches this charismatic trio with silken soprano saxophone lines that will bring you to your knees, wild, virtuoso bebop-like tenor passages, and impressively supportive accompaniments.
Together they take flight into a fantastically varied musical dream-world. It is a world of such lyrical ballads as Erskine’s “Song for Jaco” (written for Erskine’s former musical compatriot, the late Jaco Pastorius), or Lê’s gossamer “Romanichel” with its use of Far Eastern scales. There is the drive of Erskine’s audacious, undulating “Plan 9” (one might add, “from outer space”), and Lê’s “Kokopanitsa” played in his unique rock style as he finesses in shimmering Asiatic lines, up through Benita’s free jazz and bebop-instigated “Rotha & Prisca”. Strength paired with tenderness; clarity united with the cryptic; tradition combined with innovation – what you experience on this CD is one of modern jazz’ most luminous visions. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another seven years before we might again enjoy such a dream flight.
