Ashkenazy, Perlman: Beethoven Violin Sonatas Nos. 2 “Spring” & 9 “Kreutzer”

    View attachment 182131

    Release Date: 09/14/1999
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 458618 Spars Code: ADD
    Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven
    Performer: Itzhak Perlman, Vladimir Ashkenazy
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 1 Hours 2 Mins.

"These ageless performances have been wonderfully remastered using 24-bit technology, which gives even more clarity, depth, and detail to the already excellent 1973-74 recordings. Itzhak Perlman's spontaneity and tonal beauty are equally matched by his rhythmic alacrity and amazing care for nuance. Vladimir Ashkenazy's flexible and precise piano creates the perfect frame for such a jewel. Violin and piano totally fuse with each other, transforming themselves into another ideal instrument--perhaps not as openly dramatic and conflicting as Beethoven may have wished (listen to Kremer and Argerich, exact opposites of Perlman/Ashkenazy), but one of supreme homogeneity and sense of respiration. As a result, the "Kreutzer" Sonata shows a less monumental, more open and human face than usual, while the "Spring" rarely has justified its title so completely. With these performances, Perlman and Ashkenazy became an instant classic duet, the peer of legends such as Heifetz/Moiseiwitsch, Szigeti/Bartók, Huberman/Friedman, and Grumiaux/Haskil. Priceless--especially at mid-price." - Luca Sabbatini, ClassicsToday.com

Solti, Wiener Philharmoniker: Schubert Symphony No 9, Wagner – Siegfried Idyll

    Conductor: Sir Georg Solti
    Orchestra/Ensemble: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
    Number of Discs: 1

    Length: 1 Hours 14 Mins.

"Solti's superb recording with the VPO (one of his finest records)...Decca have rightly chosen it for reissue in their Legends series, coupled with Wagner's Siegfried Idyll. Both performances have comparable distinction and show that Solti could relax in music which he loved without sacrificing concentration and drama." - Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music [2008 Edition, p. 1158]

Khachaturian, Wiener Philharmoniker – Khachaturian – Spartacus, Gayaneh; Ansermet, L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande: Glazunov – The Seasons

    View attachment 182137

    Release Date: 04/11/2000
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 460315 Spars Code: ADD
    Composer: Aram Khachaturian, Alexander Glazunov
    Conductor: Aram Khachaturian, Ernest Ansermet
Orchestra/Ensemble: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Suisse Romande Orchestra
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: n/a
    Length: 1 Hours 16 Mins.

"The BBC TV series The Onedin Line popularised the 'Adagio' from Khachaturian's Spartacus (a perfect musical backdrop to the romantic image of a sailing ship). The composer recorded his selections from both ballets in the Sofiensaal in 1962, and the playing is wonderfully fresh, the sound spectacular. In Ansermet's Seasons, the SRO violins cannot match their Viennese colleagues for opulence, but this remains a vintage Ansermet performance, the conductor's meticulous ear for detail again being helped by fine engineering." - Ivan March, Gramophone [5/2000]

Berlioz Les Nuits D’été; Ravel Sheherazade – Crespin, Ansermet, Et Al

    View attachment 182146

    Release Date: 08/10/1999
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 460973 Spars Code: ADD
Composer: Hector Berlioz, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Francis Poulenc
    Performer: Régine Crespin, John Wustman
    Conductor: Ernest Ansermet
    Orchestra/Ensemble: Suisse Romande Orchestra
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 1 Hours 9 Mins.

"These performances represent one of the unchallenged peaks in the history of French song on disc. Since the day they were issued in 1963, Régine Crespin's Berlioz and Ravel have set the standard by which all others are measured, and if you've only room in your collection for one version of these pieces, then this is it. Fabulously remastered, the performances have come up sounding like new. In fact, I would go so far as to say that this is one of the finest recordings of the human voice ever made. Crespin is perfectly balanced against the orchestra and sounds almost as if she were in your listening room with you--it's that tangible. Nothing stands between you and her incomparable way with the text of each song. For students of French singing, this disc is a veritable master class! Ernest Ansermet's contribution is as distinguished as Crespin's. He knows the music inside out. The Debussy and Poulenc songs with piano are on the same high level as the two orchestral works. Stunning." - David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com

Schubert, Debussy, Etc – Rostropovich, Britten

    View attachment 182150

    Release Date: 08/10/1999
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 460974 Spars Code: ADD
Composer: Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Claude Debussy
    Performer: Mstislav Rostropovich, Benjamin Britten
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 1 Hours 0 Mins.

"Benjamin Britten was in many ways the heart and soul of English music in his lifetime and, while his fame rests primarily on his merits as a composer, nowhere is the warmth of his personality more evident than in his performing collaborations and friendships with other great artists. Upon their meeting in 1960, Mstislav Rostropovich became one of those friends, leading Britten to write several works for him as well as become his frequent partner in performing the works of other composers.
Schubert's sweetly modest 'Arpeggione' Sonata was originally written for a fretted, six-stringed cello-like instrument and offers a technical challenge for cellists. Rostropovich and Britten treat it with great affection, producing consistently beautiful tones at relaxed tempos. The Debussy Sonata has the concise strangeness of his late music and it is perfectly captured in an agile, clear-eyed performance. Similarly quirky but much less frequently heard are the 'Five Pieces in Folk Style' by Robert Schumann, engaging miniatures that seem quite substantial enough in these thoughtful performances"

    Schubert Impromptus D 899 & D 935 – Radu Lupu

    View attachment 182151

    Release Date: 08/10/1999
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 460975 Spars Code: DDD
    Composer: Franz Schubert
    Performer: Radu Lupu
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 1 Hours 7 Mins.

"These are very special performances indeed, with the warmth and introverted passion of Lupu’s playing a constant source of wonder. The slow, sustained melodic line of the sublimated march which opens the first Book; the soft cantabile of the famous Impromptu in G flat; the aching sense of longing in the trio section of the A flat No. 4 – these have surely never been bettered. Only in the very last Impromptu could one have wished for more capriciousness. András Schiff (Decca) captures its playful character perfectly. There is much to admire in his performances, as there is in Alfred Brendel’s – particularly the earlier of his two versions for Philips. But Brendel is terribly fast in that final piece; and in the last resort Lupu’s floating lyricism and unselfconscious poetry are in a class of their own. No one who loves Schubert should be without this beautifully recorded disc. " Performance: 5 (out of 5), Sound: 5 (out of 5) - Misha Donat, BBC Music Magazine

Mendelssohn, Bruch Violin Concertos – Chung, Dutoit, Kempe

    View attachment 182152

    Release Date: 08/10/1999
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 460976 Spars Code: ADD
    Composer: Felix Mendelssohn, Max Bruch
    Performer: Kyung-Wha Chung
    Conductor: Charles Dutoit, Rudolf Kempe
Orchestra/Ensemble: Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 1 Hours 18 Mins.

"Kyung Wha Chung's career was launched with a series of LPs made for Decca in the early 1970s, revealing an artist of exceptional technique, insight and spontaneity. One of these contained this rich-sounding performance of the Bruch G minor Violin Concerto, recorded with Rudolf Kempe and the Royal Philharmonic in 1972. It is still one of the freshest and most vital readings of this piece around, as Chung seems to know exactly where to draw the line between precision and abandon, the playing always seeming felt rather than planned, perhaps the highest achievement for a virtuoso. The 1981 recording of the Mendelssohn is a sheer delight, with fast tempos giving the work an extra sparkle, something the soloist obviously relishes."

    Vivaldi Four Seasons – Marriner

    View attachment 182154

    Release Date: 03/14/2000
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 466232 Spars Code: ADD
    Composer: Antonio Vivaldi
Performer: Simon Preston, Alan Loveday, Celia Nicklin, Neil Black, ...
    Conductor: Sir Neville Marriner
Orchestra/Ensemble: Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 1 Hours 15 Mins.

"Of all of Antonio Vivaldi's compositions, 'The Four Seasons' are arguably his most popular, with the most recordings to prove it. With such a plethora of recordings, it's difficult for just any orchestra to prepare a worthy offering for the crowded market. Luckily, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields is not just any orchestra.
Violinist Neville Marriner leads the Academy in a performance that breathes new life into the famous "Seasons", creating sharper contrasts and tighter rhythms in places where it had never occurred to his predecessors. Marriner's crisp solos, which move at record-breaking speed, set the pace for the rest of the violins. And even in the Allegros, they comply with a level of precision that would leave most violin sections in the dust.
The second half of the album features three of Vivaldi's wind concertos, which are presented in a way similar to 'The Four Seasons' in terms of structure and stylistic ideas. The addition of these three concertos proves that even though Vivaldi was a trained violinist, he could write well for other instruments. It's also another way to set this recording apart from others as more than just a run-of-the-mill "Four Seasons" album."

Allegri Miserere; Palestrina – Willcocks, King’s College Choir Cambridge

    View attachment 182161

    Release Date: 09/14/1999
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 466373 Spars Code: ADD
    Composer: Gregorio Allegri, Giovanni Palestrina
    Performer: Roy Goodman
    Conductor: Sir David Willcocks
    Orchestra/Ensemble: Cambridge King's College Choir
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 0 Hours 56 Mins.

"I doubt if any recording made by the choir of King's College, Cambridge, in the fertile Willcocks era will prove more enduring than this celebrated performance of Allegri's Miserere. Admittedly there are more authentic versions in the catalogue, authentic not only in that they use the original Latin words where Willcocks opts for an English translation, but also in the sense that they search for a style less obviously redolent of choral evensong and the Anglican tradition. At the farthest extreme from King's, the Taverner Consort's EMI version strips Allegri's score of its various eighteenth- and nineteenth-century accretions—a nice piece of musical archaeology which, ironically, reveals the utter plainness of the Miserere when denied its familiar jewels, and sounds like an imposter when dressed up in even more garish baubles. For once, musicology seems doomed to failure; the richly communicative singing of King's remains for many an ideal impression of the piece, however far removed it may be from Allegri's intentions. On this new CD compilation the Miserere is accompanied by some classic Palestrina performances, still as fresh as when they were made a quarter of a century ago. Some tape hiss intrudes, but otherwise the sound is excellent." - Gramophone [5/1989]

Bruckner Symphony No. 4 – Karl Bohm

    View attachment 182162

    Release Date: 08/10/1999
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 466374 Spars Code: ADD
    Composer: Anton Bruckner
    Conductor: Karl Böhm
    Orchestra/Ensemble: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 1 Hours 8 Mins.

"Karl Böhm's Bruckner Fourth Symphony has been one of the reference editions of the work ever since its first release in 1973, on two full-length LPs. Not much has changed since then. The performance is, at 68 minutes, somewhat on the slow side, but as with all the best Bruckner interpretations, tempo is less important than momentum, and this performance has that in abundance. Everything sounds natural and inevitable, the high point being a reading of the slow movement unmatched in grandeur and plain-spoken eloquence. Böhm's vision is uncompromisingly sincere, and what keeps this performance from sounding perhaps too severe is the idiomatic warmth of the Vienna Philharmonic, whose characteristic timbres--the rich strings, acidulous oboes, and monstrous horns--seldom have been caught on disc as effectively as they have here. A magnificent performance, magnificently restored." - David Hurwitz

Brahms Piano Concerto No 1; Franck, Litolff – Curzon, Szell

    View attachment 182179

    Release Date: 08/10/1999
Label: London/Decca Legends Catalog #: 466376 Spars Code: ADD
Composer: Johannes Brahms, César Franck, Henry Charles Litolff
    Performer: Clifford Curzon
Conductor: George Szell, Sir Adrian Boult
Orchestra/Ensemble: London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra
    Number of Discs: 1
    Recorded in: Stereo
    Length: 1 Hours 13 Mins.

"George Szell owned the Brahms concerto. He recorded it three times in stereo, with Leon Fleischer, Rudolph Serkin, and in this version with Clifford Curzon. By general consensus the Fleischer recording is the finest, and it's available in a newly remastered release from Sony Masterworks Heritage. Despite Szell's best efforts, the London Symphony was no Cleveland Orchestra, though he does have them playing at the top of their early 1960s form. Curzon's performance of the solo part always has been admired for its naturalness, nobility of utterance, and discipline, and this remains not just one of his finest recordings, but certainly one of the outstanding versions of the concerto. Decca's remastered sound seems to focus on the piano at the expense of the orchestra, which sounds a might shrill in this transfer--but this is a minor defect at best. The two fillers are charming, and make a welcome bonus." - David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com
