Episode Synopsis

Episode 01 - Life In The Wet Zone
A whole new dimension in the lives of plants, from the most bizarre to the most beautiful is revealed in this sensational new series shot over the course of a year. As he traces them from their beginnings on land to their vital place in nature today, David Attenborough explores the fascinating world of plants, exposing new revelations along the way. He moves from our time scale to theirs, revealing the true nature of plants as creatures that are every bit as dynamic and aggressive as animals.

David discovers a microscopic world that's invisible to the naked eye, where insects feed and breed, where flowers fluoresce and where plants communicate with each other and with animals using scent and sound. He meets the extraordinary animals and fungi that have unbreakable ties with the plant world, from hawk moths and bats to tiny poison dart frogs, a giant tortoise and a fungus that can control the mind. And he does all this in one unique place, a microcosm of the whole plant world where 90% of all known plant species are represented: The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

This spectacular adventure through the Kingdom of Plants is so immersive and compelling it has the capacity to amaze even the least green-fingered.

Episode 02 - Solving the Secrets
David uses the latest 3D technology to explore a world beyond the confines of our human senses. He begins with the secret world of plant movement and uses sinister carnivorous plants to show just how active plants can be. Bladderwort utricularia is a pond-dweller that is among the fastest known, its traps snapping shut in less than a millisecond.
As the seasons change, David demonstrates how plants operate on a different time scale to us; how they modify their lives according to the time of year. We discover insects’ hidden links with plants, both as pests and pollinators. UV-sensitive 3D cameras reveal the invisible alter-ego of plants and their flowers’ mesmerizing patterns; a parallel-dimension of strange colours and stunning patterns through which plants communicate with them.

With the aid of visual effects, David steps among the swirling vortices of plant scent; communication signals with which plants are inextricably plugged in to the natural world. And using a tuning fork, he demonstrates how plants and insects can even communicate with music. As autumn envelopes the Gardens, fungi reveal themselves not as the enemies of plants but their vital allies. In Kew’s atmospheric Fungarium, David discovers a specimen that has the power of mind control and another that lives underground where it has grown to be so big it can be counted as the largest single organism on the planet. It is 6 times bigger than Kew Gardens itself.

David concludes the film in the Princess of Wales Conservatory, where he meets an old friend, the great Titan arum. At 8ft tall, it is the largest flower in the world and a plant he remembers from a previous filming trip to Sumatra. Using heat sensitive cameras, David reveals the Titan arum’s secrets, how it uses a combination of heat and powerful scent to punch a hole in the stratified layers of air in the rainforest, enabling it to broadcast its presence across vast distances.

Episode 03 - Survival
David discovers the plants that have evolved to shed their dependency on water enabling them to survive in the driest environments. The story begins at midnight in midsummer as David steps into the Princess of Wales Conservatory to witness the extraordinary nocturnal blooming of a cactus. The queen of the night, with its giant flowers, is the centre piece of a stunning symphony of cacti blooms that burst open in the desert (and at Kew) at night. In a mesmerizing 3D slow motion sequence, we discover the extraordinary connections between cacti and their natural pollinators: bats.

The scene typifies the unique splendour of the 3D experience as bats seem to fly out of the screen and into the viewers’ living room. As the sun rises, David meets other amazing plants. Species like the century plant, the Agave franzosini, which grows steadily for over 50 years, only to then flower itself to death with one mighty telegraph pole sized bloom which literally bursts out of the roof of Kew’s green house. Cracking the code to plants’ survival strategies is the key to protecting their future and Kew have built a high tech long-term solution fifty miles south of the Gardens. Described as mankind’s ultimate insurance policy, and with 10% already safely stored deep frozen, Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank has the capacity to store seeds from the vast majority of remaining species of plant on the planet, thus saving plants from extinction in the future.

Specials Episode - Making of
Kingdom of plants 3D was to be a series with plants as the heroes, and we needed to do them justice. Our production team at Atlantic embarked upon an exciting technological adventure, developing our own specialist camera kit to shoot 3D in extreme close-up. At Kew the loading bay of the tropical nursery was transformed into a bespoke macro studio, we developed new ways of filming 3D time-lapse, and we built whole new rigs to capture the tiniest details of plant and animal structures. All of this took meticulous planning and a herculean effort in logistics alone, but the hard work has been rewarded.

There are some 120 species of duck, representing a wide variety of shapes, sizes and behaviors. Some are noisy and gregarious, others shy and elusive. They are familiar animals we think we know. But most of us don’t really know these phenomenal, sophisticated creatures at all. Ông Hồ Giáo quê xã Tịnh Sơn, huyện Sơn Tịnh, tỉnh Quảng Ngãi; là đại biểu Quốc hội khóa IV, V và VI. Ông là người được 2 lần phong tặng danh hiệu Anh hùng lao động vào các năm 1966 và 1986. Sớm tham gia cách mạng, cuộc đời Anh hùng lao động Hồ Giáo đã có rất nhiều cống hiến lớn lao cho sự nghiệp giải phóng dân tộc và sự phát triển của ngành chăn nuôi trong nước.

Từ tuổi 12, ông đã đi chăn trâu cho địa chủ. Đến năm 18, ông tạm biệt đàn trâu theo cách mạng.

Những năm 60, nông trường Ba Vì, Hà Tây vang danh khắp cả nước về mô hình điểm chuẩn chăn nuôi nhờ bàn tay chăm bẵm tài tình của ông.

Năm 1966, ông được phong tặng danh hiệu Anh hùng Lao động lần thứ nhất.

Năm 1976, ông rời Ba Vì về nông trường Sông Bé để “thử sức” với đàn trâu Mura 502 con do Ấn Độ tặng Việt Nam làm sức kéo và lấy sữa. Mười năm sau, có những con trâu Mura đạt trọng lượng 1.000 kg. Năm 1986, ông được phong tặng Anh hùng Lao động lần thứ 2. Ngày ông nghỉ hưu về quê hương Quảng Ngãi, Thủ tướng Phạm Văn Đồng tặng ông 15 con trâu kèm lời căn dặn về giúp bà con quê hương thoát đói nghèo.

Qua bàn tay chăm sóc của ông, nhiều nghé con ra đời, chuyển giao về cho các hộ dân chăn nuôi. Đến năm 2010, khi sức khỏe đã hao mòn dần, ông mới cho phép mình “nghỉ hưu” chính thức.

Ngày 14/10/2015 vào lúc 15h30 ông Hồ Giáo, người duy nhất trong ngành chăn nuôi được 2 lần tặng danh hiệu Anh hùng lao động đã trút hơi thở cuối cùng tại nhà riêng thuộc phường Quảng Phú, TP Quảng Ngãi, hưởng thọ 87 tuổi.

Tin ông ra đi về cõi vĩnh hằng được người thân và thế hệ hậu sinh chia sẻ với niềm tiếc thương kính mến./.

I. Khái Quát.

Khái niệm Châu Đại Dương bao gồm cả Châu Úc, và 13 quốc gia Đảo phía Đông nam Thái Bình Dương, hầu hết mới tuyên bố độc lập trong thập niên 1970, 1980, 1990. Tất cả các quốc gia châu Đại Dương phần lớn là thuộc địa củ của Anh. Nó là châu nhỏ nhất trong các châu, chỉ chiếm 8.539.653 km2, và trên 30.triệu cư dân. Châu Úc nằm giữa phía Nam Thái Bình Dương, và Ấn Độ Dương. Châu Úc còn được người ta gọi là "miệt dưới" vì nó nằm trọn phía Nam Bán cầu. Tên Australia, chử La tinh gọi là Australis có nghĩa là phía Nam. Tên chính thức của nó là Liên bang Úc Đại Lợi (Commonwealth of Australia). Úc Đại Lợi chiếm trên 90% diện tích đất của châu Đại Dương, và gần 70% dân số của châu này. Úc Đại Lợi là một đảo lớn khô ráo, cư dân thưa thớt 2 người/ km2.
Chỉ có một ít vùng dọc theo hoặc gần bờ biển, có lượng mưa đủ nước cho cư dân sinh sống. Dọc theo bờ phía Đông nam của đảo (lục địa) có đông dân cư hơn bất cứ nơi nào khác. Hai thành phố lớn nhất của Úc là Sydney, và Mebourne đều nằm trong vùng này. Canberra, thủ đô Liên bang Úc Đại Lợi nằm sâu trong nội địa cách hải cảng Sydney khoảng 300 km. Vùng rộng lớn mênh mông bên trong nội địa Úc là sa mạc, hoặc đồng cỏ khô bạt ngàn có rất ít cư dân. Úc Đại Lợi nổi tiếng là lục địa có không gian mở rộng nhiều ánh sáng mặt trời, với vô số cừu, bò, và vài loại thú vật hoang dã quý hiếm. Kangaroos, Koalas, Platypuses, và wormbats là những động vật phổ biến, và chỉ có một số ít động vật quý hiếm sống ở Úc. Liên bang Úc Đại Lợi là một nhóm các thuộc địa của Anh, và hầu hết người Úc là người gốc Anh.
Người Anh đến định cư ở Úc họ mang theo các phong tục tập quán từ Anh Quốc. Chẳng hạn, người Úc lái xe bên trái của đường lộ y như người Anh. Sở thích uống trà nóng của Úc cũng y tiết nắng ấm của lục địa, người Úc sử dụng thời gian nhàn rỗi của họ cho việc vui chơi giải trí ngoài trời. Họ yêu chuộng thể thao và thích vui sống bên ngoài gia đình. Úc Đại Lợi là một quốc gia đã phát triển của thế giới. Úc có nhiều thành phố năng động, nhà máy hiện đại, và có các sản phẩm nông nghiệp, hầm mỏ có giá trị cao. Úc là nước xuất khẩu hàng đầu thế giới các mặt hàng len, quặng nhôm (bauxites), cùng với một số lượng lớn nông sản, và sản phẩm từ hầm mỏ. Thu nhập từ các nguồn hàng xuất khẩu, có thể đủ cho tất cả cư dân Úc Đại Lợi trên dưới 20 triệu người, một mức sống với tiêu chuẩn cao.
Trong quá khứ vương quốc Anh là bạn hàng chính của Úc Đại Lợi. Ngày nay, Úc Đại Lợi giao thương với Nhật Bản, và Hoa Kỳ là chủ yếu. Người Úc đầu tiên có mặt tại lục địa này là người da đen nay gọi là thổ dân (Aborigins). Thổ dân sống ở đây khoảng trên dưới 50,000 năm trước khi người da trắng đến lập nghiệp. Anh Quốc chiếm Úc Đại Lợi làm thuộc địa giam giữ tù nhân năm 1788. Từ sau đó, người Anh vào Úc định cư tăng thêm đều đặn trong khi thổ dân thì cứ giảm dần. Ngày nay, đa số người Úc là người da trắng trên dưới 90%, người gốc Châu Á 6%, gốc Châu Phi, Châu Mỹ, Châu Đại Dương 3%, và Thổ dân chỉ chiếm 1%. Quá trình hình thành 13 quốc gia còn lại của Châu Đại Dương, thì mỗi quốc gia có một cảnh ngộ riêng không giống như các quốc gia khác trên các lục địa đất liền.
Newzealand bị Anh Quốc xâm chiếm đưa người đến định cư lập thành thuộc địa trong những năm 1800. Năm 1858, thành lập chính quyền tự trị và trở thành quốc gia độc lập trong Liên hiệp Anh năm 1907. Đảo Papua New Guinea phía Bắc Úc Đại Lợi bị Hoà Lan chiếm làm thuộc địa đầu những năm 1800 một nửa đảo phía Tây. Một nửa đảo phía Đông còn lại thì năm 1884 cả Anh lẫn Đức tuyên bố chủ quyền: Anh phía Nam, và Đức phía Bắc. Năm 1905, Anh nhượng quyền phần phía Nam cho Úc Đại Lợi, và Úc đánh chiếm phần phía Bắc từ Đức trong chiến tranh thế giới lần thứ I. Sau chiến tranh, Úc được Hội Quốc Liên (Leaque of Nations) ủy thác quản lý phần Úc chiếm từ Đức. Và sau chiến tranh thế giới lần thứ II, Liên Hiệp Quốc (United Nations) uỷ thác cho Úc quản lý toàn khu vực.
Cả hai phần Bắc-Nam phía Đông đảo Papua New Guinea nhập làm một năm 1949, được ban cấp quy chế tự trị năm 1973, và trở thành quốc gia Papua New Guinea độc lập năm 1975. Mười một quốc gia khác của Châu Đại Dương chỉ chiếm trên 65.000 km2, và trên 2triệu, trong đó Tuvalu có 26 km2, và 11.000 cư dân, và Nauru có 21 km2, và 12.000 cư dân. Xin lưu ý rằng, trong 11 quốc gia ấy, Anh, và Đức đã chia nhau tranh chiếm từ cuối những năm 1800. Đức chiếm Samoa, Nauru, Marshall Island, Micronesia, và Palau. Anh chiếm Solomon, Tuvalu, Fiji, Tonga, và Kiribati. Riêng Vanuatu, Anh, và Pháp chia nhau kiểm soát. Sau chiến tranh thế giới lần thứ I, Đức bị tước hết các thuộc địa và lãnh thổ hải ngoại. Và Hội Quốc Liên uỷ thác cho New Zealand, Australia, và Nhật Bản quản lý 5 quần đảo do Đức chiếm giữ.
Trong đó Nhật quản lý 3 quần đảo Marshall Island, Micronesia, và Palau. Khi xảy ra chiến tranh thế giới thứ II, Nhật mở rộng vùng kiểm soát bằng cách đánh chiếm Kiribati, Nauru, và Solomon Island. Tại đây, xảy ra những trận đánh khốc liệt giữa Hoa Kỳ và Nhật Bản. Sau chiến tranh, Liên Hiệp Quốc uỷ thác cho Hoa Kỳ quản lý Marshall Island, Micronesia, và Palau, cho đến đầu thập niên 1990, ba quốc gia này mới được Hoa Kỳ ban cấp độc lập cho họ.
