Theo đạo diễn James Gunn, The Suicide Squad sẽ là phần tiếp nối câu chuyện trong truyện tranh The Janus Detective từ những năm 80. Mặc dù một vài nhân vật vẫn được giữ nguyên như Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg, Captain Boomerang hay Amanda Waller, bộ phim sẽ bỏ đi những gương mặt còn lại và thay thế bằng những cái tên mới, cụ thể bao gồm John Cena trong vai Peacemaker, Idris Elba vai Bloodsport và Pete Davidson vai Blackguard.
