The Matrix Resurrections là phần phim thứ 4, sau bộ 3 tác phẩm gồm The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) và The Matrix Revolutions (2003) - đều do chị em nhà Wachowskis (Lana và Lilly) đạo diễn kiêm biên kịch.
Bộ 3 tác phẩm kể trên đã đem về nhiều giải thưởng danh giá tại Oscar và BAFTA… tổng cộng thu về hơn 1,6 tỷ USD trên toàn cầu, với kinh phí chỉ khoảng 360 triệu USD. Thành công này khiến cho phần 4 được rất nhiều khán giả mong đợi. Thêm vào đó, khoảng thời gian 18 năm chờ đợi càng khiến phần mới thu hút sự quân tâm.
The Matrix Resurrections lấy bối cảnh 20 năm sau các sự kiện của The Matrix Revolutions. Trong trailer được hãng Warner Bros. Pictures phát hành, Neo đang sống một cuộc sống bình thường ở San Francisco dưới danh tính ban đầu của mình là Thomas Anderson. Tuy nhiên, Neo lúc này đang phải trải qua những tổn thương tâm lý nặng nề, thường xuyên xuất hiện những giấc mơ kỳ lạ và phải uống những viên thuốc màu xanh dương do bác sĩ trị liệu đưa cho.
Đặc biệt, khi gặp lại Tiffany/Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), Neo có cảm giác thân quen, nhưng cả 2 lại không còn chút ký ức nào về nhau. Để tìm kiếm “sự thật”, Neo quyết định dùng viên thuốc màu đỏ từ tay của “phiên bản” Morpheus trẻ tuổi (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).
