Thus it was naturally chosen after careful consideration and evaluation of all the film's sources and rather numerous Blu-ray offerings.- Like most 80s films, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was shot in the "Flat" Widescreen 1.85:1 AR, a ratio that is very friendly to our modern day fixed 16:9 (1.78:1) TVs and displays. Koch's transfer, based on a remastered 2K Scan features the most consistent and clean grain articulation and fine detail, less blocking artifacts and other problems found such as on Shout Factory's release. The color is also consistent and not overly saturated in some scenes as it is on Shout's transfer.- The rather poor 5.1 upmix for this flick has been completely omitted. While Koch's 5.1 upmix is indeed better than Shout's and MGM's which are riddled with major issues, including but not limited to tincan hollow sounding dialog, phasing issues, distortion and inconsistent stereo imaging. None of these issues are present on the original 35mm Dolby Stereo SR 4-Channel encoded audio.- Included is my exclusive digital surround mix of the original Dolby Stereo SR soundtrack in DTS Coherent Acoustics 4.0 format specially mixed with great care. Allowing the original Dolby Stereo audio to now be presented in truly discrete non-matrixed LCRS for the first time. This should more or less resemble the raw LCRS production mix as closely as possible before it was 4:2 encoded by a Dolby MP Matrix encoder for the 35mm Optical Print.- Dialog is clean and rich up front and center without the tin can hollow dialog found on the 5.1 upmixes. The stereo imaging is well balanced across all 3 screen channels, and natural out of phase diffuse ambience found in the surround where it's encoded in the original SVA and all background sounds and general effects are located where they are found originally isolated in their respective channel. The Music and Score is nicely spread around all channels as it was mixed originally. Fidelity across the audio spectrum excellent thanks to the original audio being recorded with Dolby's latest Spectral Recording noise reduction at the time which debuted the year before mostly notably on RoboCop in 1987. The low end is tight, coherent and clean throughout with no looseness or bass bloat. On any 5.1/6.1/7.1 channel system, you will get mono surrounds exactly as it was in the theater in 1988 with the side and rear channels playing the same mono surround signal for diffuse ambience and SFX surrounding the viewer and complimenting the more dominant on screen action.- The original Dolby SR 4:2 Matrix encoded 35mm SVA audio is provided on track 2 in transparent Dolby Surround AC-3 format for posterity. This track is compatible either as straight stereo without a surround system, for general compatibility or 2:4 decoded with an original spec Pro Logic decoder/mode to recover the 4.0 mix circa 1988 style prior to discrete digital. Most newer AVRs/Pre-Pros no longer include OG PL decoding capability, but many pre-Atmos units from the likes of Yamaha, Bryston, Lexicon, Rotel, Meridian and others do.- Both tracks were authored on professional DTS and Dolby encoders respectively at a transparent bitrate relative to their format with proper flags set. No reverse engineered FFmpeg encoders!- Commentary provided on Track 3 in HE-AAC format by popular demand.
