Winner of two Grammy awards - Best improvised Jazz solo & Best Jazz instrumental album

This double-disc set documents Return to Forever's unplugged tour of 2009. Its 19 tracks consist mainly of rearranged RTF tunes and jazz standards for piano trio, though there are wonderful surprises on disc two. Disc one is taken directly from concert appearances across the globe. The standards work well -- considering how busy Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Lenny White can be together as well as solo. "On Green Dolphin Street," "Waltz for Debby," and "Hackensack" all swing, though they do feature moments of RTF's requisite knotty counterpoint. Originals include Clarke's new tune, the beautiful "La Canción de Sophia," as well as "Bud Powell" and "Windows" from two Corea solo recordings, and "Señor Mouse" and "No Mystery," both RTF tunes, round it out. The small complaint is that these three play so stridently and "perfectly" that they sound more like a studio band instead of a quick-thinking live unit. Everything is exceptionally played and recorded. The gems are saved for disc two, which consists mainly of rehearsals for the tour recorded at Mad Hatter Studios in San Francisco, complete with off-mike banter. Corea dons his Rhodes and other keyboards for an excellent version of "Captain Marvel" and a fully fused-out “Señor Mouse,” “Space Circus,” and “After the Rain,” all with original RTF guitarist Bill Connors playing his ass off with his former and future bandmates (Frank Gambale will assume guitar duties on tour). Violinist Jean-Luc Ponty will also join the new band formally in 2012, and he begins in that role here, appearing on "Armando's Rhumba" (he played on the original off Corea's My Spanish Heart LP), his own "Renaissance," a fine rendition of "I Loves You, Porgy" (one of two tunes with Chaka Khan on vocals), "After the Cosmic Rain," and "Space Circus." The other two surprises on disc two are a very soulful duet between Corea (on acoustic piano) and White on John Coltrane's "Crescent" and a stellar acoustic trio version of RTF's standard "500 Miles High," which was recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival and contains plenty of fire. With its looseness, this second disc offers the real dynamic potential for RTF in the future and reveals the depth of near symbiotic communication between the bandmembers.

“I had real trouble choosing whether to be an actress or a singer.” This admission is a good reflection of Leïla Martial’s personality and originality. The expressive young singer plays her voice like an instrument and speaks a truly unique language. It is no coincidence that her group was initially called “Mime and Phonium”, in other words, “Gesture and Sound”. This uniqueness is already being celebrated by professionals: the extremely rigorous jury of La Défense National Jazz Competition (Councours National de jazz de la Défense) gave her top prize for soloists, the first time the prize was ever awarded to a singer.
Leïla Martial maintains that her qualities come from her background. She really was brought up in a world of music: her father is a classical oboist and music theory teacher, her mother an opera singer. Her path was mapped out: the young girl from Ariège learned to play the piano and sing. As for school, she would attend the Marciac secondary school in the Gers region (famous for its international jazz festival) where she would learn the ropes of the industry along side the future saxophonist Emile Parisien. Leïla continued to hesitate being an actress or a singer– she went on to the Conservatoire in Castres. But her passion for jazz grew stronger and at 17, she gained a place at the Conservatoire in Toulouse for a 3-year study course which she completed with flying colours. This was followed by a term at the San Sebastian Conservatoire. Having mastered the basics - repertoire, vocal technique and temperament, she now only had to forge her personality. Leïla launched her stage career with a duo (guitarist and accordionist) and a big band. Above all, she enjoys improvising and is beginning to create her own style with onomatopoeias. “Foreign languages have always fascinated me, I spent hours imitating and inventing new ones. When I first heard Médéric Collignon it was a revelation. I was struck by the similarities between us, for a moment I thought that it was me singing.” Refusing classification, Leïla had come across another singing all-rounder. She drew inspiration from gypsy music, her first love, classical music, under the influence of her parents, contemporary music like Steve Reich, Arvo Part, and jazz of course, with a weakness for Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Eric Dolphy and Médéric Collignon – but also pop songs – Barbara, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel…

Her first album, which hasn’t yet been released consists of standards, is aimed at making a name for herself in this milieu. Leïla is stepping up to the plate. She has now been writing songs and has gone from the “straitjacket of harmony” to the piano. Her quartet started in 2007 with Eric Perez “my alter ego” (drums, sampling, backing vocals), Jean-Christophe Jacques (tenor and soprano saxophone) and Laurent Chavoit (bass). The group gained its national calling card after winning third prize in the Défense Competition in 2009.
They recorded their first album, made up of original compositions except for one track by Billie Holiday and Mal Waldron. “This album is a perfect reflection of us, between density and deprivation”, she commented . Also recorded in New York City at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the same trio of Chicagoans Lorin Cohen on bass and drummer George Fludas, the veteran pianist seems more in his element with this artist's repertoire, one that sharply defined his own sound and thinking about popular jazz. Though all of the tunes selected are not so closely linked to Cole's hit parade songbook, the way Alexander plays them with subtlety and depth does reflect what made Cole the king in the late '50s and early '60s. With the immaculate sound and performance by this fine trio--not to mention that they don't play Cole's songbook by rote or by the numbers--it's hard to fault the effort, heart, and soul behind a concept album that should delight many jazz listeners.
