Definitive's StudioMonitor 350 is a compact high-performance, magnetically shielded full-range bookshelf speaker. But don't let its small size fool you—thanks to its 8 inch pressure-coupled Low Bass radiator it belts out the bass depth and punch of a floor-standing loudspeaker. Its non-resonant monocoque cabinets feature Definitive's elegant piano-gloss black lacquer end cap/wraparound grillee cloth styling.

The StudioMonitor 350's sonic performance is truly stunning, producing huge razor-sharp, three-dimensional sonic images combined with incredible detail, ruler-flat frequency response and rich, full bass. Because the StudioMonitors are true full-range speakers with extended low-frequency response they deliver superb performance both as stand-alone speakers and when combined with separate subwoofers.

Monocoque, Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinet
The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction, or the secondary radiation of sound caused by cabinet edges, grille frames and other protrusions, can color the sound of a loudspeaker. The design of the StudioMonitors reduces diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a frameless grille "sock."

In addition, the resonant vibration of a loudspeaker's cabinet walls and baffles can also impart unwanted coloration. The Definitives' monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam damping pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by the high definition drivers.

High-Definition Cast-Magnesium Basket Drivers
The StudioMonitor 350 utilizes a 5-1/4 inch high definition cast basket bass/midrange driver for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. This sophisticated bass/midrange driver incorporates deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone, combined with butyl rubber surround and dust-cap, high temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed, magnetically inert, cast-magnesium basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve structural and magnetic integrity under all conditions.

Moving Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters
The moving coil dome tweeters Definitive developed for the BP7000 Series are used in the StudioMonitor 350. They utilize a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens, engineered to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement. This results in velvety smooth extended response (beyond 30 kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra high power handling.

Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks
The crossover network of a loudspeaker is the real heart of the system, as it is responsible for perfectly blending together the sound of the various drivers into a musically seamless whole. The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley design used in the SM350 equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for absolutely lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.

"The quality of sound that came from these was incredible."
Let me first start off by saying I love the way these speakers were boxed, there is no way these speakers will get tossed around during shipping. I also must say that these are the first speakers that I have had that come with instruction, short of where to put the screws if I want to hang them on a wall. To tell me that there is a break in time of 20 to 40 hours and the performance or sound will improve, what, that's so cool. I first set these up as my main right and left channels and they sounded pretty good but they still needed a sub. but that's not what i got them for. These guys will be used for my surrounds. Yes direct radiating is a must for my home. The quality of sound that came from these was incredible. I did not have bass in my surrounds before and now planes, space ships and explosions sound like what they should. The low frequency sound is due to the 8 inch passive radiator on the side, but the quality of sound really comes from the build quality of the speaker. I love my new toys and plan on getting more from this company and I know I will not be disappointed.

Reason for purchase: Replace older psb speakers that are powered by my NAD receiver. Review: I could go on about how the quality of sound with these speakers exceed many top name brands that I previously owned or researched 4x's over. I could also mention how reasonably priced they are and how after you hear them you expect to pay double what the price tag says. Instead I'll just say if you want to listen to music as it was intended, invest in a pair of Definitive Technology 350 speakers. You will not be disappointed.

Music is more important to me than movies, and for 30 years I've had large floorstanding speakers. I've been tempted several times to "go small" for movies (e.g., Bose), especially since the living room in my new house is smaller, but never pulled the plug because I would be giving up full-range audio for music -- that is, until I heard the Studio Monitor line.

These speakers are smooth as a hot knife thru butter -- highs, lows, and mids are very clean. They blend in nicely on my audio stands, gave me back some floor space, and as fronts are a perfect fit for small/medium rooms.

I'm using Promonitors/Procenter to go along with the SMs, so all DT now, and the combination is great for both movies and music, which was what I wanted all along. Thank you for great products at reasonable prices.

"crystal clear"
If your in the market for a crystal clear monitor that won't break the bank, the SM350's are the way to go. I do music mixing on my computer and needed speakers that reviel every detail. With these speakers I can hear the syliva on the toungs of the singers voices. I paired them up with a Supercube II subwoofer and my studio is audio bliss!

I have worked for Best Buy for over a year now and Circuit City before that, specializing in Home Theater in both stores and Magnolia Home Theater as well. Needless to say I have spent a lot of time in the Magnolia studio demoing audio equipment for customers, and even some of my 15 minute breaks when the opportunity presented itself to just close the doors, dim the lights, and turn up the volume with my favorite music or scene from a movie. Of the vast array of speakers available I always come back to the SM350 speakers. Even after comparing them to the Energy CM10 and CM20 bookshelf models, as well as the even higher priced Bower's and Wilken's 686B bookshelf speakers for example, there is no comparison to the high clarity and life-like sound quality delivered by this pair of speakers.
Coupled with the Super Cube 2000 and any Denon or Pioneer Elite receiver that offers "Virtual" or "FS Surround" audio options, which are designed for use with a stereo speaker setup, you get anything from an explosive home theater experience with you favorite action movie to a room filled with the warm melodic tones and subtle nuances and clarity of the most intricate acoustic and classical performances. You cannot possibly go wrong with these speakers. Definitive Technology are absolutely one of my favorite innovators when it comes to audio quality.

"absolutely amazing"
I recently was in the market for some new bookshelf sized speakers for music.
For music I ventured away from Definitive about 5 years ago into B&W's and purchased
a pair of DM601's. I liked them so much I purchased an LCR600 center channel as
well and started using the set for my video needs.

Prior to this I was using and still have a pair of BP8's that I purchased in the late
90's. Although I love the bipolar line, I prefer front firing for music and reserve
the bipolars for home theater. I also have a CLR2002 front channel and BP1's for
my rears that I have set up in our family room. By the way, the CLR2002 is an outstanding center channel for the price tag.

I was curious to see what Definitive had been up to lately and started reading about the
studio monitors they were now offering. I couldn't believe what I was reading when I saw
the frequency response on these small bookshelf speakers. Review after review confirmed that the range that these speakers were capable of was amazing.

I took a chance without even hearing them and picked a pair of these up over the weekend
and have been unable to pull myself away from them since. The clarity, depth, and
openness of these speakers is absolutely amazing. They simply sound INCREDIBLE and
in my opinion are much more enjoyable to listen to then my B&W's. I bought them knowing I could return them if I didn't like them. Well, I have already ordered a pair of 450's to put in another room.

From Pop, Rock, Country, Jazz, and Hip-Hop, these monitors have no problem reproducing
all that these genres encompass. The bass that comes out of these is nice and clean to
my amazement. The highs and mids are crisp and clear. Overall, I am sold on
these amazing monitors!

Although they would be pressed to be your mains in a large room, these 350's would be
perfect for mains in a small room and of course as studio monitors which is what I use
them for. I honestly am addicted to these little powerhouses.

"I highly recommend them"
i have been looking for a surround pair of speakers for my pioneer elite vsx52, i had purchased bp8020 tower speakers , which are what i wanted for a home theater setup. I regret i didnt go with the cs center channel and settled for the martin logan motion 8 , which is also great , then i was forced to go with the motion 4 for rears. well i was missing the highs in the front until i found the sm-350 which gave me the highs i was looking for with some bass , now the problem is , do i want to use them as front height speakers or just front surround speakers. they do the job perfectly and dont take much room , i highly recommend them but with the bp8020 speakers as your main fronts for that incredible added sound if you are on a budget , and dont have the room. next i hope to add SR-8080bp as sides and hopefully add an additional 2 supercubes for the additional bass .
