Early in the 1780s, Mozart began attending soirees at the home of music patron Baron van Swieten, who owned an extensive collection of Bach and Handel manuscripts. Mozart began copying Bach’s fugues for his own studies and made arrangements of Handel oratorios for performance — both would provide much of the stimulus for the counterpoint in several of his latest works. This CD gives a glimpse, though only a narrow one, into Mozart’s Bach studies.

In fact, you have to read the liner notes with exceptional care to tell what connection to Mozart some of the music included here has. There are three fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier that Mozart arranged for strings; the preludes, though, are not verifiably Mozart’s work. There are other Bach arrangements by anonymous composers from the same era. Finally, there are only two verifiable Mozart compositions: the Fugue for Two Keyboards, K. 426, and the later (and more familiar) reworking of this material into the Adagio and Fugue in C minor for strings, K. 546. Whether this smorgasbord really deserves the label “W.A. Mozart After Bach” is debatable. Regardless, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin’s performances are wonderful — stylish, impeccably played, and, in some cases, imaginatively arranged.

lt seems incredible now that Carlo Maria Giulini was the third choice of conductor for this famed recording. First choice was Beecham, and when that fell through, Walter Legge, the producer, engaged Klemperer, who, though weakened by illnesses and accidents, began working on the recording, only to withdraw after three days because of pericarditis. Legge sent an SOS to the then relatively unknown Giulini, who responded positively, though, as the booklet tells us, with some trepidation. The rest is indeed history, as the whole ensemble proceeded to work like a dream, and produce what in this case is without question one of the supreme recordings of the twentieth century, and will surely never be surpassed on disc.
Credit must go to Legge for two things in particular; firstly for assembling the peerless cast, and secondly for overseeing the technical aspects so faultlessly. The beauty of the singers is that, as befits the nature of the opera, they were either voung (Alva, Wachter, Sutherland and Cappuccilli in their thirties, Sciutti in her twenties) or in their absolute vocal and dramatic prime (Schwarzkopf, Taddei and Frick). Giulini himself was just 45, and the whole project has a dynamism and wicked sense of humour that could only be obtained with a team possessing this blend of talent, comparative youth and experience...
The recording captures all of this faithfully, with a balance that manages to make the singers sound just a little larger than life without losing the correct perspective. One of the greatest musical and dramatic experiences available on disc, then, and one that I personally will always treasure.

The ECM debut of the duo of Vera Kappeler and Peter Conradin Zumthor presents music commissioned for the Origen Cultural Festival. It is music dominated by low registers, dark hues. The Babylon referenced in the title is the Babylon of the Book of Daniel, the lion’s den, the young men singing in the fiery furnace, a place of perdition, a labyrinth... The inspirational starting point launches creative composing and improvising and the shaping of strange and poetic material which is much more than ‘programme music’ The “Babylon-Suite” is self-contained, autonomous. The piano and drums duo leaves spaces and ellipses for the imagination to fill. Kappeler’s pianistic touch and phrasing, most subtly detailed and underpinned by Zumthor’s melody-and-texture conscious drumming, draw the listener in, deeper into the dream.

After recording Vivaldi's set of Violin Concertos 'La Stravaganza', Opus 4, in 2003, Rachel Podger has been immersed in music by Mozart and Bach on disc. Thibault Noally is a recognized name in the international baroque scene he is an actor for many years, both as a solo violin Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble Marc Minkowski, with the Concerto Köln, Pulcinella or all Matheus. Natural/Cultural Forces is a musical representation of visual locations and situations. For the opener Pyramid Warren instructed the three other members of the quartet to imagine what it would sound like to be on the inside a pyramid building up.
