With this recording, Piotr Anderszewski returns to Bach’s English Suites after more than 10 years. In 2002, when Virgin Classics (now Warner Classics/Erato) released his interpretations of Suites 1, 3 and 6, The Sunday Times spoke of “Bach playing of the highest order,” enthusing that: “His playing throughout is wonderful, laying out Bach’s contrapuntal writing with a clarity and subtlety of touch that removes these works far from the realms of technical exercises. His fingers dance in the Courantes and Allemandes, and positively sing the melodies of the sublime Sarabandes”.

Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski has attracted a strong following for his Bach performances, which are now appearing on recordings and are well worth listeners' time. Anderszewski falls well over on the subjective side of the Bach interpretation spectrum, and for those who dislike the kind of recording in which the player is leading listeners through a work rather than letting them examine it, this might not be a good choice. Still less is this for those inclined toward historical performance; Anderszewski's playing is intensely pianistic. This said, he doesn't stomp on the pedals; he uses articulation and dynamic contrasts, often between the hands, more than the pedal as a means of expression. Anderszewski is after the intricacies of Bach's music: he shapes the melodies in great detail, and he is keen to clarify the contrapuntal structure of these suites, often in startling detail. The beauty of his readings resides in hearing a tiny ornament in a left-hand line and realizing that it has great structural significance. For those who don't buy his conception of the piece, his playing could seem mannered, but it would be tough to argue that it is not worked out in truly impressive detail, and in the finales he has moments of Gouldian inspiration. The so-called English Suites, in fact, are ideally suited to Anderszewski's style: he explicates the deep contrapuntal thinking embedded at a profound level in these ostensible pieces of dance music. Strongly recommended for those in the pianistic Bach camp.

Sombart-Vallet - The Art of Chopin. The Piano Concertos (2015) [Suissa] {24-96}

Mình nghe concerto số 1 này của Chopin hàng ngàn lần mà lần nào cũng cho cảm xúc khó tả. Nhất là mỗi khi đi công tác xa. Chopin đặt người nghe vào chính bản thân ông khi ông rời xa mãi mãi Warszawa. Cả Chopin và Liszt đều là bậc thầy về Piano nhưng Chopin vẫn luôn được xem là "nhà thơ" của piano. Lần đầu nghe tác phẩm này mình rất ngỡ ngàng về Chopin, một nghệ sĩ mà suốt đời chỉ sáng tác cho piano lại phối khí cho dàn nhạc hết sức quyến rũ như thế. Một điều không thể chối cãi là suốt đời Chopin chỉ có hai tình yêu đó là chiếc đàn Piano và quê hương Ba Lan.

Đúng vậy xa nhà mà nghe Piano cocerto #1 của Chopin thì càng thấm thía nỗi nhớ nhà! Đó cũng là cảm nhận của mình. Chopin không giỏi về viết cho dàn nhạc, tuy nhiên mình đọc đâu đó là cả 2 bản concertos này Chopin đều nhờ người bạn thân là... Liszt giúp đỡ phần dàn dựng cho dàn nhạc (orchestration), thế nhưng phần nhạc cho dàn nhạc vẫn mang âm hưởng phong cách Chopin, khác hẳn với 2 bản Piano concertos của Liszt, tập trung nhiều hơn hẳn vào các màn phô diễn của piano solo. Bản thu của Piano Concerto #1 của Chopin được nhiều người đánh giá hay nhất là phần trình diễn của nghệ sỹ đồng hương Ba Lan Artur Rubinstein (trong bộ RCA living stereo)

Carolin Widmann, who received praise and awards both for her accounts of Schumann’s violin sonatas and for the recital disc “Phantasy of Spring” (with music of Feldman, Zimmermann, Schoenberg and Xenakis) now applies her acute interpretive sensibilities to Franz Schubert. Widmann and Alexander Lonquich (whose own New Series disc with music of Schumann and Holliger was also a critical success) play the C-Major Fantasy of 1827 and the Violin Sonata in A-Major of 1817, as well as the B-minor Rondo of 1826 (the only one of these works published in Schubert’s lifetime). This is duo playing at a very high level, as Hans-Klaus Jungheinrich emphasizes in the liner notes: “Not once does Carolin Widmann and Alexander Lonquich’s intelligent and empathetic reading devolve into the trivial state of music for a domineering violin with piano accompaniment. Instead we are treated to a magically iridescent poem of changing colours, melodies and counterpoints.”


German violinist Carolin Widmann has specialized mostly in contemporary repertory, and her approach to Schubert bears the marks of that specialty: her playing here is spiky, given to emphasis on small structural details, full of sharp contrasts without being especially high in sentiment. You might or might not like it as a general rule, but here it fulfills her purpose and that of pianist Alexander Lonquich. Schubert’s comparatively sparse output for violin and piano has never gotten its due, and Widmann’s reading here compels the listener to take the music seriously. Schubert’s late piano sonatas, last symphony, and late choral music are so heavily programmed that it may come as a surprise to learn of other works of the period that are equal to these in quality, yet are not often heard. That’s exactly what you get with the Fantasie for violin and piano in C major, D. 934, and the Rondo for violin and piano in B minor, D. 895. The Fantasie is a close cousin to the Wanderer Fantasie for piano, but is not structured exactly like it; it has semi-independent movements, with a reprise of its haunting opening material following one of Schubert’s great long slow movements. The rondo, despite its neutral title, is a work of great emotional profundity. The Violin Sonata in A major, D. 574, a fine essay in Beethovenian style (which not too many composers, let alone one 20 years old, could execute convincingly in 1817), rounds out the program satisfyingly. With the usual superb production from ECM label head Manfred Eicher, this is a must for any serious Schubert collection. –AllMusic Review by James Manheim

The ultimate all-Puccini album from “The greatest tenor of our day”. Contains famous arias and scenes drawn from Puccini’s greatest operas including Turandot, La Bohème, Manon Lescaut, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and more…

This release by the celebrated German tenor Jonas Kaufmann has been attended by a good deal of controversy; Kaufmann has publicly protested the release of a rival Puccini album by Decca, drawn from earlier Kaufmann recordings. He has a point in that the Decca album does not even consist entirely or even mostly of Puccini. Here you get a well-chosen set of Puccini arias, touching on hits like "Recondita Armonia" from Tosca and the title track, but also bringing out worthwhile, slightly frenetic pieces from the rarely performed early operas Le Villi and Edgar. Everywhere, Kaufmann continues to astonish with his sheer versatility. Opera specialists may quibble with the details, but for the ordinary fan of Puccini's dramatically expansive style there's little to suggest that Kaufmann has not been specializing in this stuff for his entire career, and that seems to happen whether he's singing bel canto opera, Wagner, or what have you. The program consists mostly of duets, and Kaufmann or his handlers choose partners who can keep up with him. The only mild complaint is with the Orchestra e Coro dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Antonio Pappano, who at times don't put the tenor quite front and center (something that may be an issue with the very live sound environment). In general, this is a major triumph from a true vocal star.

The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI's archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues. We consult each recording's job file, which contains notes about the recording made by the engineer and producer. For example, this sometimes explain why there is more than one set of tapes to choose from. All of the tapes are generally in good condition and we play them on our Studer A80 π inch tape machine, after careful calibration of its replay characteristics.

Alexej Gorlatch was born in 1988 in Kiev and has been living in Germany since 1991. He began his piano studies at the age of seven with Eduard-Georg Georgiew in Passau, before becoming a junior student of Martin Hughes at the Berlin University of Arts at the age of twelve, continuing his music studies two years later with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling at the University of Music and Drama Hanover and subsequently with Bernd Goetzke. On this recording Alexej Gorlatch plays Stravinsky with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin and Alondra de la Parra.

This recording aims to cast a spotlight on some of the remarkable, yet forgotten music written for the solo violin between c.1840 and 1919. The long shadow of JS Bach and his own Partitas and Sonatas for Solo Violin looms over some of the works contained on this disc, yet many of the movements liberate themselves from this influence, displaying a resourcefulness and an array of moods that draw the listener into what can otherwise be the precariously narrow sound world of the solo violin. Many of the pieces have never been recorded before and some, particularly the Second Godard Sonata and Saint-Lubin Fantaisie, deserve to take their place beside Bach, Bartók and Ysaÿe as interesting additions to the central works in the solo violin repertoire.
