Năm 1996, nhà săn tìm kho báu Brock Lovett và đội của ông lên chiếc tàu nghiên cứu Keldysh đến vị trí xác tàu RMSTitanic huyền thoại nhằm tìm kiếm một chiếc vòng cổ có đính một viên kim cương rất hiếm, Trái tim của Đại dương. Họ vớt được một chiếc két, bên trong có bức tranh một người phụ nữ trẻ khỏa thân trên mình chỉ đeo chiếc vòng cổ đó thôi. Bức tranh đề ngày 14 tháng 4 năm 1912, ngày chiếc tàu Titanic va phải tảng băng trôi. Bà lão Rose Dawson Calvert, sau khi biết tin này qua truyền hình, nhận mình chính là người phụ nữ trong bức tranh, tới thăm Lovett và kể lại cho anh nghe những trải nghiệm của bà trên con tàu Titanic.

Năm 1912 ở cảng Southampton, cô gái 17 tuổi Rose DeWitt Bukater, cùng với vị hôn phu của mình là Cal Hockley và mẹ mình, Ruth lên tàu Titanic ở khoang hạng nhất. Ruth nhấn mạnh rằng hôn lễ của Rose sẽ giải quyết được các vấn đề tài chính hiện tại của gia đình DeWitt Bukaters. Trong giờ phút lênh đênh giữa đại dương, Jack đã nhường người yêu một tấm phản khá to. Rose may mắn được nằm trên một tấm phản gỗ trôi dập dềnh trên mặt biển, còn Jack thì đã vĩnh viễn rời xa cô trong làn nước giá lạnh. Xung quanh cô toàn xác người chết cóng, bản thân cô cũng đã quá mệt mỏi nhưng vì lời hứa Jack, cô đã quyết tâm sống. Cô lăn mình xuống nước băng giá, vùng vẫy tới gần xác một thủy thủ để lấy cái còi. Cô thổi những hơi lạnh buốt vào chiếc còi lấy được với hy vọng sẽ gây được sự chú ý. Và rồi người chỉ huy của chiếc thuyền cứu hộ cuối cùng quay nhìn thấy cô và Rose sống sót. Sau khi đến Hoa Kỳ, cô đã trốn Cal và đổi tên thành Rose Dawson Calvert. Sau này cô được biết Cal đã cưới một cô gái khác và thừa hưởng một gia tài lớn nhưng mất hết tất cả trong cuộc khủng hoảng kinh tế lớn của Hoa Kỳ năm 1929 và Cal đã tự sát.

Ký ức buồn vui về Jack đã đi theo Rose suốt cả cuộc đời, để bây giờ bà Rose đang sắp bước sang tuổi 101 ngồi kể chuyện cho những người thăm dò tàu Titanic về một người mà bà thực sự yêu, một người đã đem đến cho bà cuộc sống chân thực. Phim mới lấy bối cảnh 22 năm kể từ sự kiện công viên kỷ Jura 1993. Isla Nublar - một hòn đảo phía xa ngoài Thái Bình Dương của khu vực Trung Mỹ - hiện trở thành một thế giới khủng long thật sự. Công viên này được sở hữu và điều hành bởi tập đoàn toàn cầu Masrani. Mặc dù công nghệ đồ họa hình ảnh bằng vi tính (CGI) từng được áp dụng trong Star Wars (1977) hay Tron (1982), phải đến khi xem Terminator 2 (1991) và đặc biệt là Jurassic Park (1993), người ta mới thực sự sửng sốt bởi hiệu ứng CGI trên màn ảnh rộng.

Trong bối cảnh đó, Liên Hợp Quốc đã nhờ tới sự trợ giúp của Gerry, người từng nằm trong số những điều tra viên xuất sắc nhất của họ, đi cùng một nhà khoa học và các lính đặc nhiệm tới Hàn Quốc để tìm ra nguyên nhân của thảm họa này.

Bối cảnh của phim là thành phố Chicago năm 2035. Ở thời điểm này, công nghệ robot cực kì phát triển với những loại robot giống con người và chúng thông dụng như bất kì một loại máy móc nào khác. Nhân vật chính trong phim là Del Spooner, một thanh tra cảnh sát vừa mất đi vợ con và không hề tin tưởng vào robot.

Spooner nhận được thông tin về cái chết của tiến sĩ Alfred Lanning, người tạo nên 3 điều luật của robot và đồng sáng lập của công ty U.S Robotics (USR) chuyên sản xuất robot và công nghệ robot. Cái chết của tiến sĩ Lanning xảy ra sau khi một thế hệ robot mới có tên NS-5 ra đời. Đây là một thế hệ robot tân tiến, được kết nối với một máy chủ có tên VIKL được đặt tại trụ sở của USR.

Hiện trường cho thấy có vẻ như tiến sĩ Lanning đã tự sát. Tuy nhiên, Spooner lại nghĩ khác và tiến hành điều tra lại. Với sự giúp đỡ của tiến sĩ Susan Calvin, một chuyên gia về tâm lí robot, Spooner kiểm tra văn phòng của Lanning và hướng mọi sự nghi ngờ vào một con robot NS-5 có tên Sonny.
