That's right-- the studio opted on both doing the 4K scan but also slightly optimizing the film framing for home viewing to full frame 1.78:1 aka 16:9 from the original's 1.85:1 Flat Widescreen presentation. Granted 1.85 looks effectively full frame on consumer 16:9 displays since it's only slightly wider than 16:9, but enough to affect the feel of some shots. Also unlike other Blu-ray's which simply have the dreaded 1.85 to 16:9 blowup, this is an actual Open Matte and there is new shot information introduced at the extreme top and bottom to all shots. Not a huge fan to be honest on this one since it makes a film look more like a TV mini-series ala The Pacific and others, but it is a beautiful scan and the movie has never looked better. VOD HDR10+ which was a perfect match to the Blu-ray grading wise coming from the same service master was a perfect match and synced/injected to the UHD BD using proper tools. An exceptional looking HDR10+ presentation it really takes the visuals up a notch, one of the better examples of what the format can do. The contrast, scene or even mid-shot dynamics is phenomenal. The excellent Dolby Vision layer from the disc also included of course, converted to single layer MKV with FEL. We also acquired full SMPTE 2086 HDR10 metadata left off the UHD Blu-ray for the most complete possible release via industry standard processes. The UHD BD was merely minimum spec HDR10, so the film's studio HDR grade now has its relevant MaxCLL/FALL metadata to look its absolute best even in static HDR. Private Ryan was an uncapped 1000-nit HDR grade, with peak nit levels not slowly rolled off. Your TV handles this for you and especially for those watching in static HDR, no longer has to make an educated guess as to the range to make the best tonemapping desicions.
