Câu chuyện diễn ra ở thành phố New York, nhân vật chính là Melvin Udall - nhà văn sống một mình trong căn hộ tập thể, hàng ngày chỉ đến một cửa hàng duy nhất để dùng bữa, cực kỳ sợ vi trùng và nói chung là ghét tất cả mọi người xung quanh. Hàng xóm của anh ta là Simon, một nghệ sĩ đồng tính có chú chó xù đáng yêu. Thế rồi, cuộc đời của nhà văn thích châm biếm Melvin đã dần thay đổi khi Simon bị cướp tấn công và nhờ Melvin trông nom chú chó nhỏ.
