Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony and Adult/Youth Choruses deliver big-time on this recording. Telarc engineers capture the drama and the scale of this work in spades; however, some early digital artifacts do seep into the recording, a few "snaps" reminiscent of ticks on an LP. All three soloists give virtuoso performances. The symphony captures the rhythmic timing changes with aplomb, and the chorus handles the speed changes with grace and articulation that I have rarely heard before. The foundation of the pace is set by the percussion section, and they do an outstanding job! Unique to this performance is the use of an 11' bass drum, which resonates throughout, and gives heretofore unheard "feeling" to the performance. Easily one of my favorite pieces, and one of my favorite performances/interpretations.
