For some years, Thomas Dausgaard and his Swedish Chamber Orchestra have been developing their project ‘Opening Doors’, performing symphonies and other orchestral works from the Romantic era with the smaller-than-usual forces of a modern-day chamber orchestra. It has been possible to sample the results of this approach in various music centres around the world during the team’s extensive tours, as well as on disc. The present disc is the fourth of their Opening Doors recordings and at the same time the closing disc of a ‘series within a series’ – a triptych featuring Schumann’s complete symphonies. Previous instalments have been praised for the freshness of the interpretations. ‘A brilliant recording, which overturns common and oft-repeated judgements regarding Schumann the symphonist’ was the reaction of the reviewer on German website Klassik Heute, while the review of the second disc in International Record Review included the following prediction: ‘If the final disc maintains such excellence, this could well be the Schumann cycle to have’.

Eugen Jochum (1902-1987), was one of the last representatives of the traditional German school of conducting and the founder of the Bavarian Radio Symphony, Jochum was widely respected for his many recordings and the warmth and idiomatic assurance of his conducting of repertory from Bach to Hindemith. He was perhaps best known as a Bruckner specialist, recording the cycle of the symphonies and serving as president of the West German Bruckner Society. An ardent Catholic, Jochum resisted the political and moral extremism by the National Socialist regime in Germany. His humanist sympathies informed all of his music-making, and his daughter Veronica, a pianist, inherited herfather's values. 'Today, everyone thinks of me as a specialist in Bruckner's symphonies," Jochum said in a 1983 interview. "But I began with the music of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. And it is to their music that I still feel closest." This recording has an enviable pedigree as it was endorsed by Carl Or himself and was also the first coice of the BBC Radio 3 CD Review 'Building a Library' review in 1995.

Pianist Pierre-Arnaud Dablemont releases his first disc on Resonus Classics with an album containing three pivotal sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven - the two Op. 27 sonatas labelled "Quasi una fantasia" in E flat major and C sharp minor (including the "Moonlight" sonata) and the Op. 28 sonata in D major ("Pastoral"). Born in Brescia around 1571, Giovanni Battista Fontana lived in Venice, Rome and Padua, where he died during the plague of 1630. His music surprises by the mastery of counterpoint, the simplicity and the expression of its slow movements, the complexity of its ornamentation and the elegant vivacity of its short dance sections. Nicknamed 'dal Violino' and described as "one of the most singular virtuosos the age has seen". Fontana has left us an outstanding example of early Baroque instrumental music. On this release, Daniel Cuiller leads the ensemble Stradivaria in a selection of sonatas.

One of the most striking features of Rameau’s only collection of ensemble chamber music is that it seems less a tantalising essay in what French chamber music might have yielded - had Rameau not sought the bright lights of opera - than a singularly inspired genre of musical images whose significance resides almost exclusively in its own inimitable terms. The magical elusiveness of these works, so deliberately enigmatic, encourages us to ponder the significance of titles such as ‘Le Vézinet’ (as it happens, a forested suburb of Paris with a pleasure garden).
