A slut, a star, a stud and a teen all walk into an orgy... If you think there’s a punchline to this joke, then you haven’t yet seen You and the Night (Les Rencontres d’apres minuit), a visually exquisite, occasionally hilarious, and intermittently trying meditation on sex, love, dreams, death, camp and kitsch that marks a promising feature debut from French filmmaker Yann Gonzalez. Picture The Breakfast Club remixed by Jean Cocteau, Paul Morrissey, Dario Argento and Peter Greenaway, and you’ll get an inkling of what this avant-garde item has in store. While the pitch—seven Frenchies participate in a midnight orgy—promises something like Emmanuelle meets Francois Ozon, the film is less a prototype of artsy, subtitled porn than it is a lyrically made mindf---, using eroticism to explore the psychological and phantasmagorical backstories of its horny cast of characters. It’s also quite funny in parts, dishing out a few outré gags and, in one instance, an x-large prosthetic penis (worn by none other than soccer legend Eric Cantona) to mine laughs out of what increasingly becomes a trippy, dreamlike affair. Without further ado, we’re quickly introduced to the young Ali (talented American actress Kate Moran) and her beau Matthias (Niels Schneider, Heartbeats), who await the night’s events along with their uber-queer man-maid, Udo (Nicolas Maury, delivering some of the script’s best lines). One by one the guests arrive: first there’s The Slut (Julie Bremond), then The Stud (Cantona), The Teen (Alain Rabien Delon, son of the great Alain Delon) and finally, The Star (Fanienne Babe, Thieves). If these all sound like clichés, that’s the point, and Gonzalez uses a structure similar to the 1985 John Hughes comedy, with the characters gradually laying themselves bare (sometimes literally) as the stereotypes tumble and their true natures are revealed. Yet the director also has something quite different in mind, and as the action moves more and more into fantasy mode, Night ultimately becomes less of a character study—which sometimes makes it drag at 90 minutes—than a sexually infused journey into the nature of storytelling, myths and film form itself. The latter aspect is clearly where the movie succeeds most, with Gonzalez employing a number of deliberately fake studio techniques (day for night, rear-screen projection, a painted sunset) to amplify the artificial nature of both the settings and subject matter, resulting in several bewitchingly beautiful sequences, particularly in the dreams and flashbacks. Elegant cinematography from Simon Beaufils, overtly kitschy sets from Sidney Dubois, and an electro score from M83 that evokes both Vangelis and Daft Punk, make for an impressive tech package that winds up gets much mileage out of limited means.

During a secretive business trip away, Mark learns that his wife Anna is growing restless in what he believed was their happy marriage. Playtime của Jacques Tati có lẽ là thành quả hùng tráng duy nhất của điện ảnh hiện đại, phim đã đạt được những mục tiêu hiện đại chuẩn mực khi phá vỡ lối kể chuyện khép kín dạng cổ điển và khám phá ra một hình thức kể chuyện mới, cởi mở, không những vậy mà còn dùng hình thức kể chuyện mới đó để sản sinh khung cảnh của toàn thể xã hội. Sau khi gầy dựng được một lượng độc giả vững chắc ở tầm quốc tế với ba bộ phim hài Jour de fête, Mr. Hulot’s Holiday, và Mon oncle, Tati bỏ ra mười năm lập kế hoạch tạo ra một bộ phim sẽ trở thành kiệt tác sau này, ông bán hết quyền sở hữu những bộ phim cũ của mình để có thêm số tiền cần thiết nhằm xây dựng những khung cửa kiếng và bộ khung sắt thép khổng lồ – với tên gọi thân mật là “Tativille” – đó là cách mà Tati nhìn về một Paris hiện đại. Bộ phim – dài 2 giờ 35 phút, dùng phim nhựa 70 mm và âm thanh nổi (stereophonic) – mở màn tại Pháp năm 1967, và ngay lập tức gặp thất bại. Khi bộ phim được phát hành tại Mĩ năm 1972, người ta nhanh chóng rút ngắn phim còn 108 phút, dưới sự giám sát của Tati, rồi sau đó lại giảm xuống còn 93 phút và dùng phim nhựa 35 mm với âm thanh đơn (monaural). Thậm chí với hình thức thu gọn như thế, nó vẫn là một bộ phim tầm cỡ, với mật độ dày đặc và đầy sáng tạo.

Playtime là bộ phim có nội dung như chính cái tựa đã gợi nên – một khung cảnh điền dã dành cho khán giả, trong đó Tati bảo rằng chúng ta hãy thư giãn và tự tận hưởng lấy vùng không gian rộng mở mà bộ phim tạo ra, một vùng không gian không bị vướng bận bởi tính độc tài của cốt chuyện về vấn đề “cái gì sẽ xảy ra tiếp theo”, và khán giả cũng không phải bận tâm đến việc đồng cảm với các diễn viên, và tách rời ra khỏi những thủ thuật lôi kéo người xem nhờ vào khung cảnh và cách dựng phim nhằm giữ người xem luôn ở trong những trạng thái cảm xúc vốn đã được định đoạt trước. Tati để chúng ta thoải mái tạo ra bộ phim cho chính mình từ vô số vật liệu mà ông cung ứng.

Dựa trên một câu chuyện có thật về thầy giáo Jaime Escalante, “Stand and Deliver” là một trong những bộ phim hay và cảm động nhất về đề tài nhà giáo. Chuyện phim xoay quanh các câu chuyện của Jaime Escalante - thầy giáo dạy toán (Edward James Olmos) tại trường trung học East LA.
Jaime Escalante phụ trách một lớp gồm toàn các học sinh bướng bỉnh, thích nổi loạn và ông quyết tâm sẽ giúp họ trở thành những học sinh giỏi. Khi mới nhận lớp, các học sinh rất ghét và không hề tỏ ra tôn trọng ông. Thậm chí, họ còn cười nhạo và đe dọa Jaime Escalante. Nhưng bằng sự nhiệt tình cộng với áp dụng các phương pháp sư phạm tuyệt vời, chẳng hạn như dùng ngôn ngữ hài hước để giảng giải các phạm trù trừu tượng của môn toán, Jaime dần dần thu hút được sự chú ý của học trò.

Phim đã giành được Giải thưởng Cành Cọ Vàng của Liên hoan phim Cannes 1959 (Pháp), Giải thưởng Hàn lâm 1960 cho Phim tiếng nước ngoài hay nhất và Quả cầu vàng 1960 cho Phim nước ngoài hay nhất (Mỹ).

Bộ phim lấy môtip từ câu chuyện tình bi thương giữa chàng Orpheus và nàng Eurydice trong thần thoại Hy Lạp. Nhưng khi đổi tên cho giống file của phim Notre Dame de Paris (1956) mà tôi đang có và dùng KMP để xem thì phụ đề lại không chạy được. Tôi đã dùng cả MPC (Media Player Classic) vẫn không xem được phụ đề có đuôi .tst này. Bạn vucovu hoặc bạn nào có thể giúp tôi vụ này được không? Xin cảm ơn.
