The music of Cuba developed from a unique set of historical and social circumstances. African slaves, brought to work on the Spanish sugar plantations, soon outnumbered the European colonists. The attitude of the Spanish political and religious institutions towards African culture, while undeniably oppressive, was more open than in some other colonial societies. Catholic priests did their best to convert the Africans to Christianity, but they overlooked their worship of African deities as long as they gave them Christian names. In fact, santeria, a religion that combines Catholicism with African deities and rituals, is still a key part of Cuban spiritual life.

Most of the songs on this collection are a style called son, (lit. "sound") one of the most popular and influential Cuban musical forms. Son developed around the turn of the century in Oriente, a region in eastern Cuba. Migrating musicians brought son west to Havana in the 1920s, where it exploded in popularity. The fundamental element of the son is a rhythmic pattern called clave (lit. "key"). Played on two wooden sticks, called claves, this repetitive beat is the foundation upon which all of the other musical elements are structured. It gives son the propulsive swing that has endeared it to people around the world. Most contemporary salsa is based on son.

César's songs are redolent of the melting pot that is northeastern Brazil. His nasal tenor vocals are surrounded by choirs of backup singers, perky accordions, and rip-roaring percussion, plus aggressive brass charts on the uptempo numbers, and airy strings, woodwinds, and acoustic guitars on the ballads. Born a generation later than Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, César shares their passion for melody and the slurred, luscious intricacies of the Portuguese language. Although his work is consistently charming, it's also seldom more than that. That being said, this well-crafted album of tropical pop is perfect for al fresco brunches, dance parties, and other festive occasions. Electronica is a very global phenomenon, and serious world music enthusiasts will tell you that it isn't hard to find world/electronica hybrids coming from places ranging from Ireland and Scotland to Japan to North Africa. Electronica also has plenty of followers in Brazil, where club hounds have been combining Brazilian rhythms with jungle/drum'n'bass, trance, house, trip-hop, and many other club-friendly styles. Putumayo has described Brazilian Lounge as one of 2006's Brazilian/electronica compilations -- not electronica as in harsh, abrasive, forceful techno and rave music, but electronica in the softer chillout/downtempo sense. Much of the time, however, this 44-minute CD's electronica credentials are questionable. The use of some electronic programming doesn't automatically make your music electronica; hip-hop and new age (to use two disparate examples) are often heavily electronic, but neither is considered part of electronica. And for the most part, Brazilian Lounge is best described as a jazzy Brazilian pop disc that has some chillout and downtempo references but isn't aimed at a hardcore electronica audience. One needn't be heavily into electronica to appreciate this release. Anyone who has spent a lot of time listening to Ivan Lins, Astrud Gilberto, Ana Caram, or Ithamara Koorax will have an easy time getting into tracks by Bebel Gilberto (Joao Gilberto's daughter), Katia B, and others; Brazilian Lounge emphasizes the subtle, gentle, understated side of Brazilian pop (as opposed to, say, the more exuberant forro recordings that have come from northeastern Brazil) and does so with enjoyable results. Some of the artists on Brazilian Lounge are established veterans (most notably, Marcos Valle), while others didn't enter Brazilian pop until the '90s or 2000s (Paula Morelenbaum and Luca Mundaca, for example). Either way, fans of Brazilian pop and bossa nova will find a lot to appreciate on Brazilian Lounge.

Love was born Laura Jones in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1960. She is of African American, Native American, and Caucasian descent. Love had a difficult childhood, raised by a mother with schizophrenia and in foster homes. Her father, who had little involvement in her life, was the jazz musician Preston Love who played sax with Count Basie, Lucky Millander and Johnny Otis and formed his own band in the 1950s. Love's mother, Wini, had been a singer in Preston's jazz band.

Roots reggae fans will be pleased to hear Nigeria's Majek Fashek, South Africa's Lucky Dube, and Martinique's Kreyol Syndicate and the top extra-Jamaican acts here upholding reggae's original mission to transform Babylon "shitstem." Seminal Jamaicans Burning Spear and guitarist Ernest Ranglin more than redeem the rep of reggae's birthplace. But one has to question the inclusions of Bob Marley clone Rocky Dawuni, from Ghana, and American folkster Peter Rowan's criminally pallid rendering of Marley's "No Woman No Cry."

Mo' Vida! charts a course along the cutting edge of Latin music, but what makes it so fascinating is that much of it doesn't originate in Latin countries. Ricardo Lemvo, from the Republic of Congo, now a resident in the United States, offers some reggae-inflected hip-hop. King Changó was born in Venezuela, but his home is in New York, and three of the artists here, including Sergent García, are from France. It doesn't mean real Latin music is unadventurous by any means. Cuba's Orishas have the best hip-hop track on the album with "Represent," and Xiomara Fortuna, from the tiny Dominican Republic, catches a wonderful reggae groove on "Juana la Loca" while keeping some exquisite polyrhythms going. What it boils down to is that the world is becoming one musical melting pot with everybody drawing from--and adding to--the music that moves them. Latin music means far more than salsa or rumba these days, and, as this shows in grand style, far more than the pristine Latin pop of Ricky Martin. Welcome to the 21st century, Latin style.
