Dominican music mainly focuses on the so called "bachata", a particular style of Cuban music featuring intense African percussion, wily ringing guitar, and exotic Iberian-flavored melody. Putumayo brings a fresh and exciting sound to fans of Afro-pop, Cuban, and various Latin music. The Dominican son is closely related to Cuban son, but has a more bouncy rhythm and uses unique melodies and song structures, and many locals claim that the 'son' is of Dominican origin and was brought to Cuba by Dominican immigrants. Enjoy a great album with the known putumayo quality.

Putumayo dips back into its vast treasure trove of Latin sounds, this time coming up with a collection of contemporary fusions of salsa, son, hip-hop, electronica, and jazz. The artists here are from areas as diverse as San Francisco, Marseilles, Nicaragua, and Stuttgart, proving the shaky maxim that if there really is a universal musical language, its accent is Latin. The sounds here are meaty and party-ready, with hefty doses of experimentation. Probably the boldest sonic explorer here is Funkanzazenji, a duo out of Lille in northern France. They combine hip-hop beats, flamenco palmas, harp, and Middle Eastern oud into a dancefloor mix that manages to be warm and danceable at the same time. El Conjunto Massalia's funky version of Compay Segundo's classic "Chan Chan" remains faithful to the spirit of the original while planting this chestnut firmly in the 21st century. Los Angeles band Ozomatli brings a message of social justice to its "Cumbia de los Muertos." The English-language rap by Chali 2na calls for an end to hatred and violence. It's all delivered over a deep, juicy blend of cumbia, reggae, and hip-hop. San Francisco's Los Mocosos' brash "Soy Callejero" is joyously in your face. Los Aterciopelados' "El Estuche" has a dark sensuality with its electronic beats and ghostly background vocals. The whole release hangs together quite well despite, or perhaps because of, its geographical diversity. A party's a party after all, and Putumayo has made it a mission to make sure the world's parties have a soundtrack

    Putumayo Presents: French Caribbean (2003)

EAC Rip | Format: FLAC (Track) + Covers | Size: 333 MB | 5% Recovery
Genre: Salsa | Label: Putumayo World Music Presents

Putumayo Presents: French Caribbean isn't the first time a Putumayo compilation has had an Afro-Caribbean orientation, but is the first Putumayo disc that has focused specifically on the Afro-French side of Afro-Caribbean music. Unlike 1997's Caribbean Party and 1999's Caribe! Caribe!, this CD is almost devoid of English lyrics -- all of the artists on French Caribbean perform in either French or Creole. Of course, not all Afro-French music comes from the Caribbean; there are French-speaking countries in Africa (Cameroon, for example), and Afro-French music also exists in Louisiana. But French Caribbean doesn't get into African pop or Louisiana music; the artists on this compilation are from Haiti (Zin, Haiti Twoubadou, Carimi, Michel Martelly, Emeline Michel), Martinique (Taxikréol, Ralph Thamar, Kali), or Guadalupe (Kassav'). And even though all of the artists have an Afro-French orientation, French Caribbean is far from monolithic. Some of the selections are highly exuberant -- especially Zin's "Kanpe Sou Yon Bit" and Kassav"s live performance of "Writ" -- but others favor a moodier, more dusky approach, such as Haiti Twoubadou's "Ki Demon Sa-a," Martelly's "Pa Manyen Fanm Nan," and Michel's "Moso Manman." salsa/Afro-Cuban music is a major influence on this CD, as are reggae and funk. And some of the artists incorporate hip-hop -- for example, Zin on "Kanpe Sou Yon Bit" and Carimi on "Ayiti (Bang Bang)." So when all is said and done, the listener is exposed to a compilation that is diverse and unpredictable yet cohesive and focused. French Caribbean isn't as generous as other Putumayo compilations; the disc clocks in at around 47 minutes, and one wishes that Putumayo had provided another half-hour of material. Nonetheless, those who enjoyed Caribbean Party and Caribe! Caribe! should have no problem getting into French Caribbean as well.

    Track Listing:
    1.Mandolin - Taxikreol
2.Mi Se La - Ralph Thamar
3.Pa Manyen Fanm Nan - Michel Martelly/Black Alex
    4.Parfum Des Iles - Kali

    6.Man Biswenw' - Jean-Luc Alger
    7.Moso Manman - Emeline Michel
8.Kanpe Sou Yon Bit - Zin
    9.Ayiti (Bang Bang) - Carimi

    Putumayo Presents: Nuevo Latino (2004)

EAC Rip | Format: FLAC (Track) + Covers | Size: 277 MB | 5% Recovery
Genre: Latin | Label: Putumayo World Music Presents

In the 1990s, the term "Nuevo Latino" was coined to describe a new type of cuisine that blends ingredients from Latin America, Europe and the U.S. to create an exciting and original fusion. A similar blend has occurred in the music world. Young artists from the Americas and beyond have used a stock of Latin rhythms, portions of alternative rock, reggae and electronica, spiced with local languages, rhythms and instruments to create a flavorful musical stew.
In this new Latin music, hints of Cuban son, Brazilian bossa nova, Argentinean tango, Colombian cumbia can be heard alongside touches of contemporary blues, loungy surf music, ragamuffin, trip-hop and hip-hop.The mélange reflects the multicultural influences guiding a new generation of musicians.
Nuevo Latino features the Cuban soul of singer and songwriter Raul Paz, Mexican musical and cultural revolutionaries Los de Abajo and newcomer Federico Aubele, who presents subtle remixes of tango from his native Argentina. The Eric Clapton-inspired guitar of Spanish superstar Jarabe De Palo reveals the deep influence of blues on his music.
New York band Mosquitos offers a beguiling blend of accessible rock and bossa nova. The multicultural background of London-based Kad Achouri is reflected in his intriguing music. French/Spanish singer Sergent Garcia’s mix of Cuban salsa, Jamaican reggae and ragamuffin have earned him worldwide fame.
Nuevo Latino also features Acida, an Argentinean husband and wife duo that perform loungy Latin music. Spanish singersongwriter Javier Álvarez, who was discovered singing in Madrid’s subways, is featured as our Colombian alternative rockers Aterciopelados. The collection is closed out by Kana, a French reggae band with a Spanish lead singer.
The artists on the Nuevo Latino collection represent some of Putumayo’s favorite songs by singer-songwriters, remixers and rockers who are among the innovators of these exciting new directions in Latin music.

The phenomenon of dance music has its core in Europe, so it's not terribly surprising that they'd be at the forefront of the world groove (aka world-tronica, aka ethno-trance) movement, as well as purely European dance music that features heavily here. The album opens up with the French DJs Rouge Rouge and a surprisingly catchy bounce. Turk Mustafa Sandal has a remix straight from mid- to late- '90s American R&B, and some very nice electro-pop from a German group leads into another French DJ collective, closing the first European pass with a surprisingly effective Cuban hook. Starting a tour of Africa, the current master of fusing the old and new, Issa Bagayogo, combines synths, koras, and ngonis on a hit from his Timbuktu album. Zap Mama bridges the gap between continents culturally, adding a deep thump under the usual vocal prowess, and a hip-hop hit from Cheb Mami's Dellali album follows, moving the focus north a bit. Finishing up the African pass is South African Brenda Fassie, remixed into some dub-like dance. Moving out of the main spheres a bit at the end, there's a piece of electro-son from Edesio, and a piece from the Middle East by Lebanese Ragheb Alama. Included with the disc is a stray Egyptian/Indian video from the Travel the World With Putumayo DVD, as well as a full album-length sampler taking from the full lines of groove and lounge CDs on Putumayo. Given the incredible beats and dance music on the primary disc, and some extra bonuses, this disc ranks highly among world dance releases for the year.

A celebration of jazz, blues and swing, New Orleans style!

The musical traditions that New Orleans has nurtured are legendary, but music is not just the stuff of legend there. In the city’s streets, it is a vibrant, ever-evolving art form. New artists regularly learn from their predecessors, and inject those lessons with fresh energy and ideas.

For New Orleans, Putumayo founder Dan Storper researched traditional jazz and blues in forms both old and new after becoming a part time resident of New Orleans in 2003. The collection includes legends Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Doc Cheatham, Dr. John and The Preservation Hall Hot 4 with Duke Dejan alongside local favorites Nicholas Payton, Kermit Ruffins, Deacon John, Dr. Michael White, Topsy Chapman, Kevin Clark and Gregg Stafford.

The descriptive liner notes, written by New Orleans musicologist Baty Landis, are in English, French and Spanish. They feature striking photographs by respected New Orleans photographer Michael Smith, as well as a resource guide for New Orleans music, travel and entertainment. Renowned New Orleans chef Paul Prudhomme has contributed a recipe for seafood gumbo.

New Orleans is also the latest addition to Putumayo’s successful series focusing on the rich musical heritage of Louisiana, including Kermit Ruffins, Louisiana Gumbo, Zydeco and Cajun.

Putumayo Kids Presents: Folk Playground (2006)

EAC Rip | Format: FLAC (Track) + Covers | Size: 185 MB | 5% Recovery
Genre: Kids, Folk | Label: Putumayo World Music Presents

The Putumayo Playground line of records has a sophisticated feel to it in a sense. The music is chosen for kids' enjoyment, but it's rarely dumbed down. It's basic world music, but with a tone and tempo that fits well for kids. The albums are surprisingly suitable for adults as well though, given the breadth of music and content. On Folk Playground, Putumayo has what's probably the most strictly kid-oriented album yet. Folksingers from around the horn contribute a track here, with some old standards, some new compositions with a full backup band, and even a stray Disney song put into Texas swing. The tone of the album is perfectly fit for a kids set, and the songs are original enough to avoid some of the pain for parents involved with the massive overplay inherent to anything owned by kids. Though it is a bit short, it's a nice little children's album first, and a decent set of simple folk music second.

    Track Listing:
    01. Victor Johnson - This Old Man (2:03)
    02. Zoe Lewis - Sheep (3:15)

Putumayo Kids Presents: Brazilian Playground (2007)

EAC Rip | Format: FLAC (Track) + Covers | Size: 224 MB | 5% Recovery
Genre: Latin Folk | Label: Putumayo World Music Presents

One of the earlier additions to Putumayo's children's line, Latin Playground alternates between catering to children through music specifically for them and enriching the album with works that happen to be playful but were not necessarily made with children in mind. While this one is a little less adult-friendly than some of the others in the line, it still has enough variety to last for a good series of inevitable replays at the hands of kids. The album runs around the Latin spectrum quite well, taking in Mayan-language music from Lila Downs as easily as Flaco Jimenez's brand of Tejano. American folk with a mild Mexican influence is here, as is some forro from Nazare Pereira. The breadth of styles is quite something, and though the explorations are not particularly deep, that is certainly not a major detraction for a kids' album. Some of the other albums in the Putumayo kids' line may have a little more depth, but this one isn't bad at all, and can draw from the label's considerable expertise in Latin music at the same time.

Since its rise to global popularity in the 1970s, reggae has remained a defining influence on international music. This Putumayo sampler, entitled REGGAE AROUND THE WORLD, charts the effect of that influence, and the way it appears, either undiluted or in hybridized form, in music from Africa, Australia, South America, and the U.S. The inclusion of pureblood reggae artists like Burning Spear keeps the original torch burning, but the real treat is in hearing how reggae is incorporated into songs from Nigeria, Ghana, Brazil, and elsewhere. Like most Putumayo releases, REGGAE AROUND THE WORLD is bright, groove-centric, and eminently listenable.

    Track Listing:
01 - Salao de Beleza (Zeka Baleiro)
    02 - Drangkinbala (Blekbala Mujik)
03 - We Love It (Lucky Dube)

Like Putumayo's previous kid-oriented compilations, this 2009 release gathers a set of light-hearted, multilingual, international songs, united on this outing by the theme of food. Among the fun offerings on this musical cornucopia are a reggae paean to cherries, a jazzy American ode to shoo-fly pie, a Cuban salute to yummy arroz con pollo, and a swinging Canadian invitation to bake cookies. The track list surprises, as the countries of origin do not always produce the expected genre -- a German song about milk is a spirited reggae-ish number by kid band Donikkl, and the Australian song celebrating tomatoes is an upbeat soca-influenced ditty by Bomba. The simple, happy tunes on this collection will appeal to kids without annoying their parents.

    Track Listing:
    01. Eat Like a Rainbow (USA)- Jay Mankita
    02. Mes Parents Sont Bio (France) - Pascal Parisot
    03. Bolitas de Arroz con Pollo (USA/Cuba) - Jose Conde y Ola Fresca
    04. Ice Cream (Trinidad) - Asheba
    05. Goutez-les (France) - Frank Monnet

I recently received a copy of Putumayo Kids Presents: Jazz Playground and was excited to listen to it! Ever since I figured out I could stream my iTunes from my laptop to my XBox 360, we've been listening to more music. My kids all love music, and we've been fans of the Putumayo Kids series for a long time!
This jazz album does not disappoint! I started playing it when the kids were outside, and when they came in, Nate immediately said "Hey! Jazz!" Jazz is probably his favorite genre of music right now, and one of his favorite jazz musicians is Poncho Sanchez. This Putumayo CD is geared towards kids, and the sound and vocals are very kid-friendly -- but still jazz!
One of our favorite songs is "Stomp Stomp," which you can listen to here, as well as 2 more songs from Putumayo Kids Presents: Jazz Playground. Other favorites were "Shortnin' Bread" and "Agree & Disagree". My mom always sang "Shortnin' Bread" when I was younger, and I often sing it to my kids. This version has a much better rhythm than mine! LOL!
This was a wonderful CD, and one I know will get plenty of play in our home.

    Track Listing:
    01. Stomp, Stomp - Lewis Franco & The Missing Cats (USA)
    02. Spider-man - Chris McKhool (Canada)
    03. Cumbamba - Jose Conde (USA-Cuba)
    04. Sur Le Pont D'Avignon - Triocephale (France)
    05. Little Lamb Jam - Oran Etkin with Charenee Wade (Israel/USA)
    06. Gazooba - Kinderjazz (Australia)
    07. Sing a Song of Sixpence - Barbara Morrison (USA)
    08. Zuignapje - Trapperdetrap (The Netherlands)
    09. Shortnin' Bread - Selloane featuring Famoro Dioubate (South Africa/Guinea)
    10. Agree & Disagree - The Mighty Buzzniks (Australia)
    11. Dois Meninos - Gui Tavares (Brazil)
    12. Oyatsu no Jikan - Modern Conya (Japan)
    13. This Little Light of Mine - Ingrid Lucia (USA)

Few people have made the kind of lasting, universal impact that Bob Marley has made with his music. In his short 36 years, Marley managed not only to introduce hundreds of millions to reggae but also spread powerful messages of peace, love, human rights and acceptance. It’s no surprise that almost 30 years after his death, one can travel to any part of the globe and witness his far-reaching musical legacy.

Bob Marley would have been 65 in 2010, and in celebration, Putumayo presents Tribute to a Reggae Legend, a multi-genre album featuring artists from around the world performing many of his bestloved songs. The collection is the first tribute album Putumayo has produced and its first with five exclusive, original tracks.

Artists who recorded songs for this release include Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, a group of refugees displaced to Guinea during the Sierra Leone civil war. They beautifully harmonize on a poignant interpretation of “No Woman, No Cry.” South African Afro-fusion band Freshlyground contributes an original recording of “Africa Unite,” demonstrating their signature mix of African folk, kwela and jazz. Original recordings of “Could You Be Loved” by Québecois singer Caracol (formerly of the group Dobracaracol), “Natural Mystic” by California reggae/rock band Rebelution and “Sun is Shining” by Ghanaian reggae artist Rocky Dawuni, add to the diversity of the collection.

    Track Listing:
    01. Is This Love - Three Plus
    02. Do It Twice - Robi Kahakalau
    03. Natural Mystic - Rebelution

Parents have been singing children to sleep for thousands of years, and every culture has its own special bedtime songs. The singers on this album are from North America, and the music is "acoustic," which means electric instruments were not used. In this booklet, you'll find the lyrics to the first song, "Dreamland," written by American singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter. Happy travels to the land of dreams!

Putumayo announces the launch of the Putumayo World Beat series with African Beat and Latin Beat. The series follows in the footsteps of Putumayo’s popular Groove series in its exploration of world music blended with contemporary styles such as hip-hop, soul, R&B, electronica and more. African Beat and Latin Beat also mark the launch of Putumayo’s digital music offerings and will be sold on iTunes, Amazon, 7digital and select other major digital music retailers worldwide, as well as the label’s website. The physical albums will continue to be sold through Putumayo’s network of thousands of non-traditional retailers and record stores. This Latin Beat re-release version features 3 new tracks.

... On Latin Beat, the label explores funky new blends of Latin music, in which electronic beats, hip-hop flavors, DJ remixes and cutting-edge grooves are fused effortlessly with Colombian cumbia, Cuban son, Mexican banda, Spanish flamenco, Afro-Peruvian roots music and more. Contemporary Cuban bands Moneda Dura and Edesio add the voices of Cuban legends Ibrahim Ferrer (of Buena Vista Social Club fame) and Adriano Rodriguez to a catchy breakbeat sound. Colombians Jontre and Mariposa Solar demonstrate how effortlessly groundbreaking Latin musicians are using traditional rhythms in a contemporary pop context. Putumayo Kids Presents: Caribbean Playground (2004)

Part of the World Playground series on the new sublabel Putumayo Kids, Caribbean Playground takes a nice little romp through the Caribbean, making stops at most of the major islands and including a bit from elsewhere. The course of the album bounces around from location to location, but since this is a kids' album, it keeps a light sound. To summarize, this is much more Bob Marley than Peter Tosh. Taj Mahal starts the journey with his Hula Blues band, followed by Desmond Dekker showing off some ska on the classic "Jamaica Farewell." Kali plays the banjo over a little bit of mixed Martiniquean music, and Keith Frank covers "Three Little Birds" -- in zydeco. Frenchman Karl Zero enlists the remaining Wailers to help out on "Coconut Woman," and Marlene Dorcena represents a bit of light Haitian song. Making the first trip to Trinidad, Asheba shows off some soca groove, mixing in folktales of Anancy that have made the way from Africa -- the requisite cultural storytelling for a kids' album. Puerto Rican expatriate Jose Gonzalez shows off some bomba, another Haitian act plays a bit of the resurrected twoubadou, and Tongan reggae fanatics MissionIriez take on some transcontinental reggae. Finishing off the album are Luc Leandry's zouk and another round of soca from Trinidad. The sound can be a bit juvenile and repetitive for adults from time to time, but then again, adults aren't the audience for this one. That said, the artists are almost without exception standouts in their fields, and the music is of high quality as a result. As such, the album makes a nice groove for anyone, regardless of age.

    Track Listing:
    01. Taj Mahal & The Hula Blues - Great Big Boat (USA) (2:42)
    02. Desmond Dekker - Jamaica Farewell (Jamaica) (3:25)
    03. Kali - Tambou Dan Tche Nou (Martinique) (3:03)
    04. Keith Frank & The Soileau Zydeco Band - Three Little Birds (USA) (3:00)

    06. Marlene Dorcena - Panama (Haiti) (3:15)
    07. Asheba - Little Anancy (Trinidad) (2:57)
    08. José González y Banda Criolla - Bomba Te Traigo Yo (Puerto Rico) (4:54)
    09. Lole-Lolay - Pa 'Piye Sou Do M' (Haiti) (2:27)
