Lost Horizon: The Classic Film Scores of Dimitri Tiomkin(FLAC)


Review:
Classic Film Scores were a series of recordings in the 1970's featuring golden age composers. Charles Gerhardt loved films and music written for them. This recording features the four time Oscar winner Dimitri Tiomkin, classical trained, and fully capable of creating whatever was necessary for a wide variety and type of films. It is ironic that his first film assignment, Lost Horizon, was easily his grandest, earning Dimitri his first Oscar nomination. In the film score series, Lost Horizon was easily the most expensive to produce, requiring extra percussion players as well as a large chorus. Featuring 16 tracks from the score, the 23 minute suite was also the longest in the series. The suite is filled with wonderful themes and melodies, choral passages, dissonant brass chords, a true tone poem of color and harmony.
The Carl Foreman film The Guns Of Navarone features a strong military theme that is proud, bold, and upbeat in character and style. The other part of the "Prelude" track is more lyrical in nature, played by the entire string section. Listen to this theme a few times and you will find that it will stay in your head - you will be humming the theme over and over. This is a characteristic of many Tiomkin themes, that addicted melody sticking in your brain until you hear another theme which will start the process all over again!
The 1952 Howard Hawks film The Big Sky features a wonderful melody, "Quand Je Reve", used as the main title and also as a love theme for Teal Eyes, the romantic interest in the film. The other prominent theme, along with the love theme, are performed in the track "Wide Missouri Epilogue". Had it not been for High Noon in 1952, also composed by Tiomkin, who knows how popular this might have become. Written in the style of Grofe, listen for a small section of the famous "Grand Canyon Suite".
The 1956 film Friendly Persuasion features the "Love Scene in the Barn" track which begins with a little song theme called "Coax Me A Little". Coax is exactly the word for what the track has to offer. It is like a nervous boy asking for his first date and not having the right words! Dimitri gives us a couple of notes of his famous theme, then a little more and finally he comes forth with his popular theme Friendly Persuasion. This is a good example of how an excellent arrangement well performed by the National Philharmonic can enhance a melody. A popular song made famous by Pat Boone, Friendly Persuasion has never been large in film score circles, but this arrangement seems to bring out the best of the theme.
Also included are the themes from the Cinerama Search For Paradise, a proud majestic theme for chorus and orchestra. Fourposter is an overture depicting a gay and happy time full of bristling rhythmic patterns. This film later became the famous musical "I Do I Do" in later years.
This is a good introduction to the film music of Dimitri Tiomkin. The conducting, orchestra, arranging, and engineering are all outstanding! You can hear and feel the love for film scores that Charles Gerhardt had! Recommended!

This CD is the reissue of the famous LP produced in 1973 by George Korngold with the collaboration of Charles Gerhardt. It includes 12 musical sections, corresponding to same number of films starred by Humphrey Bogart. Most of the scores were composed by Max Steiner ("Casablanca", "Passage to Marseille", "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", "The Big Sleep", "The Caine Mutiny", "Virginia City" and "Key Largo"), though there a few composed by Franz Waxman ("To have and have Not" and "The Two Mrs. Carrolls"), Friedrich Holländer ("Sabrina"), Victor Young ("The Left Hand of God") and Miklós Rózsa ("Sahara").

Sunset Boulevard, The Classic Film Scores Of Franz Waxman(FLAC)


Charles Gerhardt was just the right conductor to revive these classic scores from the prolific film composer, Franz Waxman: His lush, melodramatic interpretations of the music do not fit every genre, but he feels right at home here with the sweeping melodies of the silver screen.
A good selection of Waxman's film music can be found here, including his most acclaimed, Sunset Boulevard. (It certainly has a sparkle that Joel McNeeley's recent rerecording seemed to lack, even if the score is not present here in its entirety.) Other highlights are the stirring themes of Prince Valiant and the eerie and sinister tones of his score for The Bride of Frankenstein. A particular favourite of mine is Rear Window, sadly absent here, though to my knowledge only one recording exists (Lalo Schifrin and the San Diego Pops, Hitchcock: Master of Mayhem): Fans can take solace in the fact that one of the Rear Window tunes appears here in its earlier form as we heard it in A Place in the Sun.
If you are a film music buff, this is definitely worth a place in your collection. Gerhardt captures the essence of Waxman perfectly.

Classic Film Scores For Bette Davis (FLAC)


Review:
This is one of several albums in the RCA-BMG Classic Film Scores series that were hooked around stars and their screen personae, rather than grouped around the work of a particular composer. As Bette Davis' prime years were spent at Warner Bros., Max Steiner was closely involved with virtually all of her important films, and he is the principal composer represented here, with some additional contributions from Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Franz Waxman. In keeping with its focus, this collection is mostly comprised of brief excerpts, as the material at hand emphasizes memorable themes rather than larger, sweeping musical arcs -- Dark Victory is an exception, represented with over six minutes of music filled with an enveloping 19th century romanticism; All This and Heaven Too is, similarly, proportioned and overpowering next to the surrounding pieces. Perhaps the most startling moment on this CD, however, is one of the shorter pieces, the excerpt from A Stolen Life; Steiner often stole from himself, but the main title theme here was used virtually note-for-note by him as the "Pine Island Theme" from A Summer Place 15 years later. Korngold fans may well wish to skip this disc, rather than bother about the less than two minutes of his score for The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex included here. The playing is impeccable and the sound has held up reasonably well, though this CD could use a fresh remastering to bring out the playing in the quieter passages. Miklós Rózsa/Ben Hur-Complete Original Film Score/FLAC


The original music to Ben-Hur was conducted by the composer and performed during recording sessions that took place between June and December 1959. The film was previewed several times and after every preview the music was rewritten. Even after the final notes had been recorded, the film was heavily cut and the already recorded music track was also cut to fit the newer, shorter film. In all, more than three hours of music were recorded, including a number of alternate versions.
This 3-cd edition:
The first two albums will enable you hear the complete original film score for the very first time as it was originally intended, in excellent stereo. The music can be listened to chronologically, as it appeared in the film. Some of the tracks that had been poorly edited at the time have now been newly sequenced into a better, smoother-sounding version. The third cd should be strictly looked upon as of documentary value only. The music on this album will enable you to compare the film version with the original recording sessions and it will also introduce themes that were left on the cutting room floor.

In the early 1940s, producer David O. Selznick wanted to create a film with the healing power of psychiatry as its core theme...and he wanted Alfred Hitchcock to direct. Based on the 1928 Francis Beeding novel, The House of Dr. Edwardes, SPELLBOUND went into production with not only two charismatic stars (Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck), but also a famous surrealist artist to design the key dream sequence: Salvador Dali. The film opens at a mental clinic in the Alps, where director Murchison is about to retire and awaits his replacement, Dr. Edwards. Soon after Edwards arrives, he suffers strange outbursts triggered by parallel lines against white. Edwards love interest, Dr. Peterson (Bergman) investigates these strange occurrences and soon discovers that all is not as it appears with the mysterious Dr. Edwards, and events unfold in true Hitchcock suspense. While SPELLBOUND received several Oscar nominations, it won just one: best original score. Miklos Rozsa's work on SPELLBOUND was his only project for Alfred Hitchcock and resulted in one of his most famous scores. Featuring a passionate love theme and a theremin to evocate a sense of paranoia, Rozsa fashioned a thrilling score that has been recorded in many guises. From single and double piano concertos, concert suites, highlights, and themes, SPELLBOUND has had plenty of exposure...but never has the score been recorded in its entirety, featuring the original orchestrations. Until now. In a joint effort between Intrada and Belcanto, the SPELLBOUND score became a top priority for a full recording and it was compiled and restored by Rozsa expert Daniel Robbins. In late November 2006, the score was brought to Bratislava, Slovakia where it was recorded in its entirety with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Slovak Radio Concert Hall under the skillful baton of Allan Wilson and engineered by Peter Fuchs. For authenticity, an actual theremin was located in London and recorded at the Ridge Farm Studios in West Sussex. The theremin was performed by Celia Sheen. What has resulted is the last word on Rozsa's sumptuous score for SPELLBOUND,. Although this recording will be released in April, starting today and continuing every few days until the album is released, we'll be adding video clips from the behind the scenes recording of this project, including comments from Daniel Robbins, Paul Talkington, Rozsa Society representative Alan Hamer, conductor Allan Wilson, Doug Fake, and many clips from the recording itself.
