We’re pleased to announce the release of Howard Shore’s The Lord of the Rings Symphony: Six Movements for Orchestra & Chorus. The album was recorded live in concert in Lucerne Switzerland this past February in partnership with Bavarian Radio who will broadcast the world premiere of the concert in its entirety on September 4, 2011. The Lord of the Rings Symphony: Six Movements for Orchestra & Chorus was performed by the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra & Chorus and soloist Kaitlyn Lusk under the direction of Ludwig Wicki.

The score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy has been hailed as some of the greatest film music ever written. Sweeping in scope, it is a musical interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth—an operatic tapestry of cultures, histories, languages, and people.
The Lord of the Rings Symphony – a six-movement piece spanning Howard Shores three film scores was created from the nearly 12 hours of music composed by Shore for the film trilogy. The six movements reflect each of the six books of The Lord of the Rings.

“Maestro Ludwig Wicki personally selected the musicians who comprise The 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and who perform on this recording,” said Shore. “Over the past four years he has perfected this music in Lucerne, Switzerland. His precision and supreme musicianship is evident throughout the recording. I congratulate him on his success and thank him for his masterful approach in bringing this score to life.”

"This series of recordings is a natural progression from Sunset Boulevard: The Classic film Scores by Franz Waxman, which Charles Gerhardt recorded with the National Philharmonic for RCA in the seventies. Like that disc, most of the music heard here has been faithfully reconstructed from the original scores especially for this recording and are available for the first time since the soundtrack was conducted by the composer. Taken together these chronicles are a retrospective of Waxman’s thirty-three year career in Hollywood (1934-1967), and a tribute to his principal orchestrators Leonid Raab and Edward B. Powell.

THE EPIC FILM MUSIC OF MIKLOS ROZSA contains interpretations and adaptations of famed Miklos Rozsa film scores.
The Epic Film Music of Miklos Rozsa is an expanded version of the kind of soundtrack compilations that were available in the 1960s. Allowing for the fact that most of the Rozsa scores represented would stand up well on their own, this is a good survey of his work in the genre, especially for neophyte listeners. It is questionable, however, whether The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Beau Brummell, and All the Brothers Were Valiant really are epics; the core of the hour's worth of music on this album is derived from such epics as Quo Vadis, Ben-Hur, El Cid, King of Kings, and Madame Bovary, and the material from the other films and their scores really fits more easily into other genres. Kenneth Alwyn does a decent job of conducting, and the music is well represented -- the scope and majesty, as well as the complex expressiveness and stylistic density of Rozsa's music, come through. The only drawback is that much of the music represented here is now available on individual full-length recordings. ~ Bruce Eder
